you can get a nice 1 bedroom in Staten Island for $650 in a real nice neighborhood, you can take the train to the ferry, and I think the ferry costs 50 cents on the return trip, also if you had a bad day or a good day for that matter, they serve beer on the ferry..:D

There are good apartment deals up in a part of Washington Heights (Manhattan). Most of it is really bad, but there is a part near the hudson (180's west) where a lot of jewish senior citizens, music students, and med students live (near Columbia Univ. Medical Ctr). It's a really nice area. My GF lives in a large 1 bedroom w/ full kitchen and bath for $1100. Its a block away from the subway (express to downtown).

If I had to, I'd rather live there than queens.

i would say that the nicer areas of queens are flushing eastward. neighborhoods to consider:
bayside, whitestone, douglaston, astoria, jamaica estates, forest hills, flushing, rego park, in random order.

used to live in queens... felt safe enough to walk in those neighborhoods any time of day.

Thanks for all the responses! I'm actually goin up to Queens this weekend so maybe I can get a feel for the place. I gotta print out this thread, cause I'm gonna forget all the places that everyone has mentioned.
