How much does it cost to get a piano tuned?

A 1950's or '60s upright (or possibly a spinet, console, studio, or other subtype) probably isn't worth a whole lot unless it's a great maker or a collector item for some reason. Maybe $200-500.

Tuning isn't always just tuning, it can mean strings, pads, hammers, keys, etc. You can expect a minimum of $100 from a music student up to $500 if major replacements are required for the tune.

Edit: I just checked around and found some students charging only $50 for a quick tune. If you're serious about it you should get a pro though, and prices seem to start around $100 for a guild member.

It's not hard to tune a piano yourself. Download an audio file of a "middle A" and tune it by ear. If you can't do that, go to a music store and buy a $15 tuner. That coupled with some guides will save you a lot of money.

About $100 will do it. If you don't play the piano then I would suggest getting it professionally done.

Pshaw. I've played and tuned guitars for fifteen years, but I'm not about to screw with tuning our piano. I took a look in there out of curiosity, and I'd rather just pay someone $65 to do it.

But, as mentioned, there's parts that may need to be replaced. I'd like to get rid of our piano because I don't want to pay to have it refurbished, and we already have a nice digital.

Tuning a piano isn't about getting the keys to make certain notes, it's about interactions between various keys and a number of other nuances. While you can roughly tune one yourself unless you have an AMAZING latent talent you need a professional to do it correctly.

Well I can tune a guitar by ear without any trouble. I've read the online guides and while using a tuner is easy, yeah you have to tune the piano to itself. I'm sure I could get all the A's to be in tune with middle A, but counting beats to get the other strings is something I've never done.

Just had mine tuned last week for the first time in 30 years. It cost me $95 and took the guy 2 hours. Pianos are not worth much, but make sure the sounding board (board in the back) is not cracked. Also check the cast iron piece with the strings on on the inside. I think it is called the harp. Make sure it is not cracked and make sure the pegs that hold the strings look OK. Also check the action to see if anything is sticking. My keys were stuck and I needed to clean the whole action and lube the keys with graphite. Took me some time to get it fixed, but the GF loves it.

Just had ours done for $180, but it's really just $90. Got charged double cause we hadn't done it in 15 years, so person "had" to do it twice.
