Moving to a new place and wanted to hire a maid (or cleaning services) to clean up the bathrooms and the kitchen. Basically, I want it to be sparking clean when I move in. Any idea of how much something like this would cost? A ballpark figure should be enough.

where are you from? In chicago they are pretty cheap, but in other cities(less Polish and Hispanic populations) they are more and do less....

Western CT. We do have a sizeable hispanic population here. I don't really mind paying unless it's less than a $100. Shouldn't it take less than and hour?

Here in LA a mexican maid (not a company. She is illegal and does jobs by word of mouth) and she charges around 8 bucks an hour. "Real" maid companies are more expensive

Depends on whether you get someone word of mouth or through an agency

How many hours does she work though? I'm more interested in per hour rate.

I'm about to hire a cleaning lady for our house. My wife and I just don't have the time to do housework on a regular basis. We spend a few hours cleaning and 2 days later it looks like we haven't cleaned in a month. It's tough having a child sometimes...Wouldn't trade him for the world though.

How many bathrooms, how big are they?

Since you're moving in I would assume they are mostly clean ... I would want them cleaned again, sanitized, bleach everywhere, soap scum, mildew removed, etc.

I'd say $150 for a good cleaning job which should take about 2 hours or 1 hour with 2 people.

my mother pays $50 for the cleaning lady to clean her 2 BR apt. Takes her about 4hrs.

Id say $10 per hour is fair

Most maid services are gonna charge you more for the first-time or a one-off cleaning. IF you continue to use them weekly or bi-weekly, your per-visit charge will go down. Expect to pay $120-$200 for the initial "spring cleaning" depending on the size of the place and how dirty it is initially. Then expect to pay $50-$100/visit again based on the same parameters.

Do any cities still do topless maids? When I lived in Corpus Christi, TX back in '91 they had a topless maid company there. They ended up getting busted and shut down for, what else, prostitution.

And unfortunately, the "maids" at a maid service often get less than $8 per hour.

An independent contractor should be more trustworthy and might also do a better job since they must rely on word of mouth. (Not that I condone the illegal worker aspect, but obviously not all cleaning people are illegal, and some others are just doing what they gotta do--at least bolido's maid is doing honest work and isn't out whoring or scamming/robbing people.)
