How much does H&R Block charge for taxes?

I was looking at their site, and it never really says how much it costs to go in and get your taxes done. It has an online pricelist, but I assume thats just if you have them do it online and not in person. I don't really feel like driving to find one just to see how much it costs.

Also, are there any better alternatives to H&R Block (besides doing them myself)?

i've heard that h&r block people aren't always as experienced as you would like. take that for what you will, it's not my opinion, just something i heard.

I'd like to see your idea of cheap!!
My accountant charges $375 to do my and my wife's personal tax return. $177 for a business is cheap.

Well I called them on Friday to see if they could handle my nonresident alien taxes. I knew that they'd simply fill in answers on a computer like any monkey, but I thought maybe they could offer advice on deductions and what not. I could tell that they'd never done these ones before and the lady spent a minute then came back saying that they could. I asked for a price and she said that she couldn't give me one and she "wouldn't even want to tell me something and have it wrong", and I'd have to come in.

I said thanks, hung up the phone, and then proceeded to bad mouth HR block to my friends in the office.

Add to this the fact that HR Block charges you that extra free to offer free error correcting. What a crock. If you pay somebody to do something you shouldn't have to pay extra so that if they screwed up (thus meaning you paid for crap the first time) they'll fix it.

Unless you have some special circumstances maybe you should stop that :) I realize that deductions that you're unaware of can easily outweigh the cost of the accountant but I've been looking at regular forms for citizens that don't have particularly weird circumstances and they are quite easy!

Skoorb, I'm not really concerned about the cost as it is deductible on the next years taxes, so I don't really pay for it (refunded the next year). Plus he's gotten me really good results so far. I always do my taxes myself first, using whatever software package happens to be on sale and he always finds more money for me.

That's a very good idea...does he find more money than he charges though?

I have my own personal tax agent to do my taxes for me. He charges a modest $20 and is quilified and experienced enough to be handling fortune 500 companies like Louisiana Pacific.

I've been paying $40 for Fed/State combined. I got tired of watching him fill in the blanks using last years forms with this years numbers, so I'm going to try out Turbotax this year. :)

I've been doing my own taxes for three years now. When you don't have investments, own a home, etc, it is really easy. I don't itemize my deductions as the standard deduction is higher. I only get to take one special credit because I'm in school (lifetime learning credit). Also, I don't really make enough money to trigger the audit formula, so I'm pretty safe.

Actually, I'm going to be doing the taxes for several friends this year. They are going to buy me things, so its a pretty sweet deal for me.
