How much does fat weigh?

Do you know what your body fat and lean muscle mass measurements are? Because when you start losing weight, it won't be just fat.

If you are 100% fat right now, then 11.55lbs. Since that's unlikely, probably a lot more.

When you lose weight, you're going to lose muscle too. It's unavoidable unless you have really high testosterone. In fact, depending on what your body fat is now, it may be very hard to hold a low bodyfat % if your testosterone isn't high enough.

If your bodyfat is around 20% now then you will need to lose 13lbs assuming you lose no muscle at all.

100% agree.

why don't you just lose weight until you look the way you want to look (emaciated),
instead of relying on some formula?

Thanks. That's probably not a good assumption but it gives me an idea.

I'm 5'9" 1/2.

Then why would you want to lose weight? Doesn't sound like you have much in the way of fat. Just start a regular exercise program of aerobics and resistance training and you'll tone up. You may actually gain weight but it will be muscle weight, not fat.

You need to have a better idea of your lean mass before you can say "I need to lose X amount of weight to drop 7% fat". Check with your local health club, gym or maybe even hospital to see if you can get a body fat caliper measurement done. They're quite accurate if administered by someone who knows what they're doing.

Here is a table of how much fat you would need to lose depending on what your bodyfat % is at the minute
14% 1.9
15% 3.8
16% 5.7
17% 7.6
18% 9.5
19% 11.4
20% 13.3
21% 15.2
22% 17.1
23% 19.0
24% 20.9
25% 22.8
26% 24.7
27% 26.6
28% 28.4
29% 30.3
30% 32.2

I just got a caliper test. I have 22.75% body fat.

In that case, you have 37.5 lbs of fat on you right now. To get down to 15% body fat, you need to lose about 13 lbs.

I don't look bad, but I have more fat around my waist that I'm happy with.

When you gain, you'll gain both muscle AND fat. When you lose, you lose both muscle and fat.

You're not going to gain 100% lean muscle unless you're doing roids. You're going to gain some fat, it's unavoidable.

Thanks. I went from about 175 to 165 with not much effort (couple of weeks). I've plateaued at about 165 for a week now.

I'm shooting for the end ofthe summer to lose the body fat. Does that sound reasonable?

That's going to be the LAST place you lose fat... you're going to lose a lot of muscle before you lose fat around your waist.

Very reasonable. You're talking about roughly a pound a week if we consider the end of August to be the end of summer. That's an average caloric deficit of only around 500 kcal per day. Skip a soda (or other snack) and get a little exercise in every day and you should be good to go.

I don't know how your genetics are, but for some people it's reasonable, for others it isn't. People with high testosterone shouldn't have much problem packing on muscle and losing fat. But people with low or average testosterone may find it impossible to have the percentage of muscle vs. fat that they want. This is why people often turn to raising their testosterone by taking steroids. When they take it, with their T level now raised they have no problem adding muscle and losing fat. Not everyone is created equally. Some people may have twice the T level as you.

Well, yeah, but by toning up the muscles will grow and muscle weighs more than the same volume in fat. Over time, overall body fat will drop while weight won't necessarily drop and will most likely go up a bit.
