I know of a website that has 1/10'th the traffic and makes 60-80K a year on advertisements alone. I would not be shocked if he was seeing $250,000.00 yearly however it takes an awful lot of money to run a site like this. If he is seeing $50K yearly, free and clear, he is probably doing good.

Anyone remember his home-building thread?

He's making waaaay more than $50k.

I was talking to one of the reviewers for the site (name will not be disclosed). He said he makes enough money, but just barely. One of the perks is being able to keep most of the stuff he reviews. He either stashes it into his closet or gives it away to friends and family.

Anand doesn't make a lot of money. He makes around 100k a year, probably less than that.

I am hoping this is sarcasm.

I'm not being sarcastic.

Here is a snippit of an email.

This is my full time job, yeah. It’s a pretty sweet job, but it does have pro’s and con’s. Industry standard is being a contractor, and so everyone at AT except for Anand is basically a contractor. It gives you some freedom but it sucks out loud around tax time.

SOME of the stuff, I get to keep. The cases always stay because they’re not worth shipping back, same with the coolers. On rare occasion a desktop or notebook will stay or be on “extended loan,” but that’s rare. On the flipside, once you’ve built up relationships in the industry it’s very easy to source most of the components you need. Engineering sample CPUs can’t be resold, so after a boutique like iBuyPower or AVA Direct no longer needs them, they pretty much give them away. An engineering sample is a fully functioning CPU, basically identical to a retail chip, but given to businesses to test products with.
Another snippit
As far as income goes, I'll have to respectfully decline. Just know that
it can be difficult to make a living in this field. It can be done, but
it's tough.

I'd laugh if Anand makes less than 150k a year on this site. It's by far one of the most popular tech sites, and offers WAY more than other sites in terms of useful tools for computer builders (Bench section, anyone?). If he's making less than 150k, I'd negotiate better contracts. I just don't see under 150k, though.

Guy has a Ferrari: you don't get those from having "a good year". When (smart) people with money buy a Ferrari, they buy them knowing they will be able to afford service/support/insurance long-term.

Out of all the hardware I got from Anand, I think two pieces actually worked.

If he actually reads the crap posted under his masthead, my estimate is between not enough, and are you freaking kidding me. Very good articles for sure, and hopefully the forums pull in enough ad revenue to counteract hosting opinions that are either flagrantly wrong, or just a horrible black eye to respectability. Looking at you P&N, and VC&G.

I respect his style of staying out of these forums, because frankly they have turned to an ad revenue dump, and there are very few here I would want to associate with in real life.

the forums are separate from anandtech itself AFAIK. they're just a community thing, but the main focus really is anandtech.com

Anand is very well respected in the tech community. I'm sure he's doing just fine.

Uh, yeah that is what I was alluding to in my post. Sorry you didn't see it, but yeah he is definitely doing fine because he doesn't associate with us morons posting in the forums. Kind of the point I was trying to drive, but we are just forum idiots so maybe I had to be more blunt.

Dr. Thomas Pabst sold Tom's Hardware way back in 2007 for 20 million dollars. I'm sure Anand is doing just fine.

I wonder how the hell these sites make so much money on ads. Ad block plus is one of the 1st things I install on any new system.

If I see an ad I instinctively ignore it, even IF it pertains to my interests (realized after looking at it :p).

I've been posting here for years. I've NEVER read a SINGLE article @ AT.

How is this BS profitable? Makes me think of AOL. They make all their money from ads, but they don't really do shit but generate content to get traffic to get that ad revenue.

Probably a decent amount, I make 100 bucks every 2-3 months off my site that only gets 200 thousand page views a month compared to the millions per week (day?) this site probably gets.

Though, it's probably not enough to upgrade the server because it's bloody slow latetly. :p Also lose lot of potential revenue because of all the downtime.

Well remember, Anandtech means a lot to Anand. He started the site on a Yahoo website with parts he bought (back in high school) and it eventually grew to this. This is his full time job, although he does have a degree in computer engineering (if I recall correctly).

I thought it began on Geocities?

He gets showered in the most advanced hardware known to man on a monthly basis. He could be making minimum wage and still be living like a king.
