Heck, I'll eat out all I want and just not tip.

That'll teach the restaurants and the waiters/resses that their system sucks and doesn't always work.

Heck, if more people were like me, the restaurant managers might actually start having to PAY the waiters/resses some more money! :)

And they will start charging 15-20% on service tax??? You go figure.

WTF where did you hear that tips are untaxable? Maybe you were confused because the vast majority of waiters/waitresses simply outright lie on their taxes about the amount of money they made in tips.

Yea, I NEVER report what I make in tips (about $210 a week)

So are you saying that people should decide what they want to tip you and then take 30% off to make up for the taxes people have to pay in taxes to make up for those that don't. So if I was going to tip 15% maybe I should drop it down to 10% now.

Yea.. you wanna know something? if it's not easy then the restaurant should be paying them more to compensate for that, if the restaurant can't do that and serve meals at a decent price, then that restaurant shouldnt be in business.

There are jobs out there that are harder than waiting, where you get paid a lot less than 15-20/hour.

.....

....Oh, sorry, I was waiting for the point.

First off, since it would be your first waiting job, you would probably only get hired at a second-rate restaurant. Most places like Applebee's and TGI Friday's won't hire you without some form of experience... a summer at a fast food joing and a summer washing cars isn't good enough, unless the restaurant is having trouble finding help. Even if you DO manage it, they won't give you any more than 2-3 tables at a time until you get good at it. When I say good, I mean PERFECT. If you can't do perfect at 3 tables, there is no chance of you doing good at all with 6. It will probably take a month or so before they start giving you more tables. Because of this, you won't get many hours until you start getting better.

As far as your question goes, in an average restaurant, with average customers, with an average amount of business, you'd make about 15-20 an hour if you do your job right. The amount goes up as the price of meals go up, the number of people you move in and out of the seats, the number of tables you get and some other factors. I wouldn't dream of making any more than $100 a night, even that amount is pushing it because you have to consider that from 2-5 and after about 7 or 8 o'clock, the amount of customers drops dramatically.

not easy? what is hard about it? if you can take a little sh!t from picky/egotistical customers, organize your thoughts, and arent lazy, waiting is a breeze. the only people ive known that thought it was hard were either lazy, stupid, or had no common sense. its actually pretty easy money.

and yes you have to pay taxes on tips. ofcourse, you dont have to pay taxes on tips you dont claim, but i wouldnt recommend that. if audited(rare, but it does happen), good luck paying back taxes and penalties on a waitress paycheck.

The hard part about it is that you have little to no control over most situations. You are the median between the kitchen and the customer, you take the blame for what the kitchen does, and if something goes wrong, most customers will assume it is somehow your fault. Not only that, but you have to learn how the line between bothering customers and annoying them best fits each customer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's hard, I'm saying it's NOT EASY. The OP is looking for a way to make some easy money over summer break, more so than a FF job, and I'm merely saying that not a sit-on-your-ass type of job.

And menu prices go up. It's a zero-sum game, if you don't pay now, you'll pay later.

That's fine! I would rather have menu prices go up, then frickin waitresses gettin paid erroneous sums!

this entire time, i've been talking about how servers are spoiled royally, and how the dining system is completely ****ed up.
And you want me to become a server?? No, I will not promote this kinda $hit that goes on.

I spent a few years waiting tables:

At Hansel's in Big Bear: I averaged $20 hr
At the Chicken Dinner Restaurant at Knott's: Averaged $12 hr

But it depends on the seasons and such too. And yes, I'm male.

Waiting tables is a lot of work compared to what I do now (hell desk) but a lot of fun too. Plus you get to flirt with the waitresses. :D

Wait, waitresses are erroneously getting tipped? Why would so many people accidently leave money? Unless you just misused your word of the day calendar trying to sound like you know what you are talking about.

You know, I'm all for giving a crap tip for crap service, but not tipping because you don't like the idea and thinking that wait staff make too much is downright stupid. You don't want menu prices to go up. Would you really want to pay 3 dollars for a soda just to ensure that it's always filled? God forbid someone in this world have a job where being friendly and actually working is rewarded. When you are done being jealous at the fact that you have just come out of highschool and can't make more than 7 or 8 dollars an hour then you may realize that being on wait staff actually IS work, more so than grocery store clerks who run food across a scanner all day and get paid just as much as the waitress busting her ass for ungrateful people like you.

You are, in fact, an ass, and should shut your face while you're still ahead (barely).

Do waitresses make more than waiters thru tips?

And how do you get yourself into a nice comfy job like this?

i remember going to Bakers Square a couple of times in Chicago. man that place was GOOD. Their Corn Bread was AMAZING.

I work at a restaurant...

typically your servers (waiters) make minimum wage hourly. for me, on a good night, i averaged upwards of $25-30/hr. on a slow night, more like 12-15/hr with tips.

If the food is bad, I either tell them to make it right or I tell the mgr to. I don't lower my tip because of it. But so many times I've seen the server hanging out talking to employess or cleaning when I know my food is ready. Too many servers now just expect a high tip no matter how bad their service is. Even the rude ones.
