How much does a waitress at a restaurant usually make per hour with tips?

I know this is a very variable question, but just at your standard place like Baker's Square or something?

Do waitresses make more than waiters thru tips?

And how do you get yourself into a nice comfy job like this?

for some resturaunts, you might have to work a little while as a "show you to your seat" person before you get promoted to server.

other than that, i know nothing!

ussually the base wage is very low.

from what i've heard sometimes being overly nice doesn't net you a better tip since it looks like your having too much fun working.

quite sad.

I work as a valet...

I clear about 18-25/hour, realistically a little bit more than that since 2/3rd isn't taxed.

//edit

My friend who was a waitress @yardhouse, pulled in ~200 in tips a night, ~350 was her record.

But out of that she has to tipout the bus boy and stuff

And let me guess, she thinks everyone should tip 20% now, or you are a pud.

I tell you, this tip inflation thing is a communist plot.

I heard that it is easy on average to make 18.00 an hour being a waiter!

is this true? that is crazy if it is. if so, then i have REALLY been in the wrong job market.

that would mean my last summers working at fast food restaurants, and washing cars, were absolute wastes,

meanwhile while my friends are landing internships, or full time jobs over the summer (something I was not able to manage to do) etc
wow, i feel so inferior and crappy.

mostly depends on the clients and menu prices. 18/hr sounds about right. but most places make you tip out busboys, bartenders, runners etc.

waiters/resses rarely work full time, tho. so 18/hr sounds great, but if you only work 20hrs a week, its not that great. you can also have a slow week that can really set you behind. you also have to kiss a lot of a$$.

I know a girl who works as a waitress 15 hours a week, while she's in college,

that's helping her pay for school majorly,

18/hour x 15 hours = $270 / week. And most of that is untaxable since tips are untaxable right?
And she's hot too, so no wonder why they hired her for being a waitress.

thats bullcrap. I make so much less than that right now. no wonder how she pays for this expensive 19 grand per year tuition college.

Waitresses shouldn't get tips, that's bullshit! No one should get tips, Tipping is gay.
I especially hate it how tipping has become a society custom in restaurants.

I am not going to tip someone ever again. I do not agree with tipping. Why? Because they simply don't deserve it.
There are people out there busting their butts just as hard as they are and are not making that much money either.
If waitresses aren't making enough then it's the restaurant's responsibility to pay them more. If the restaurant can't
afford to do that, then maybe that restaurant shouldnt be in business. maybe that means a lot of restaurants shouldnt be in business.

Sheesh by tipping someone you are just spoiling them.

Let me be the first to say that you don't say a few VERY important things.... being on wait staff is NOT easy.
First off, since it would be your first waiting job, you would probably only get hired at a second-rate restaurant. Most places like Applebee's and TGI Friday's won't hire you without some form of experience... a summer at a fast food joing and a summer washing cars isn't good enough, unless the restaurant is having trouble finding help. Even if you DO manage it, they won't give you any more than 2-3 tables at a time until you get good at it. When I say good, I mean PERFECT. If you can't do perfect at 3 tables, there is no chance of you doing good at all with 6. It will probably take a month or so before they start giving you more tables. Because of this, you won't get many hours until you start getting better.

As far as your question goes, in an average restaurant, with average customers, with an average amount of business, you'd make about 15-20 an hour if you do your job right. The amount goes up as the price of meals go up, the number of people you move in and out of the seats, the number of tables you get and some other factors. I wouldn't dream of making any more than $100 a night, even that amount is pushing it because you have to consider that from 2-5 and after about 7 or 8 o'clock, the amount of customers drops dramatically.

Yea.. you wanna know something? if it's not easy then the restaurant should be paying them more to compensate for that, if the restaurant can't do that and serve meals at a decent price, then that restaurant shouldnt be in business.

There are jobs out there that are harder than waiting, where you get paid a lot less than 15-20/hour.

In most restaurants, waitresses earn an hourly rate that's lower than the minimum wage which is why they rely on tips so much. Problem is that you'd be surprised how many people "under-tip" because they don't know how much they should leave. If a waitress is pleasant, helpful and does a good job in serving you, she should receive a tip of 15% to 20% of the total bill.

Friends I know who are waitresses say that older people are the worst to serve and leave the lowest tips. The next worst category is a table with a party of six or so - by the time the bill is paid, the tip might only be around 10% and it's the hardest category to serve simply because of the large number at one table.

Hey I got a TIP for you buddy....

Don't fricken eat out if you want to tip.
There are plenty of places to eat if you don't want to tip, McDs, Wendy's and the likes....
You can sit there and justify all you want why the servers make so much money but the reality is our TIPPING SYSTEM has been in place for many many years and its still working just fine.

If you feel that strongly against the tipping issue, DON"T EAT OUT....as simple as that.

This thread is just waiting for a flame fest...I can feel it.

Don't eat out?

Heck, I'll eat out all I want and just not tip.

That'll teach the restaurants and the waiters/resses that their system sucks and doesn't always work.

Heck, if more people were like me, the restaurant managers might actually start having to PAY the waiters/resses some more money! :)

And menu prices go up. It's a zero-sum game, if you don't pay now, you'll pay later.

not easy? what is hard about it? if you can take a little sh!t from picky/egotistical customers, organize your thoughts, and arent lazy, waiting is a breeze. the only people ive known that thought it was hard were either lazy, stupid, or had no common sense. its actually pretty easy money.

and yes you have to pay taxes on tips. ofcourse, you dont have to pay taxes on tips you dont claim, but i wouldnt recommend that. if audited(rare, but it does happen), good luck paying back taxes and penalties on a waitress paycheck.
