So I was out driving, stopped at the local murder mart/quick stop for soda & gas. The soda was up to $1.49 for a 20oz f'in Pepsi. You can get the damn things for $0.75 at Costco! I told the lady to keep the damn thing.
I mean really, why should the price of soda go up? I don't get it.

cause people will pay it. i drink cheap soda since it's all sugar water anyway. i think i'm going to quit, but it'll probably be harder than cigarettes.

edit: it's 1.00 at the machine at work. 1.14 at a gas station..they always gouge.

Depends. It's generally $1.00 for a 20 oz and 55-75c for a can, from vending machines.

Of course if you buy it at a gas station, it's going to be more expensive than at CostCo.

You aren't being charged for the soda. You're being charged for the convenience of buying it at the gas station where you happen to be anyway versus driving to CostCo just for a 20 ounce bottle of soda. If you think driving from the gas station to CostCo is worth it to you to save 70 cents, more power to you.

Gas stations around here:
HUUUUUGE signs that say "pepsi 2-liter 98 cents"

Of course, *all* of the 2-liters are warm... most people are stopping to get gas anyway, but if you want to get something to drink, your choices are attempting to chug from a warm 2-liter, or buy the over-priced 20oz bottle for $1.39 (here)

Aat work a 20oz costs $1 out of the machine. Like $1.19 at the local gas station. I usually buy 2 liters in bulk when they are on sale for a dollar and bring one into work with me. I share it with the 2 other people in my little office.

Several different factors come into play.

a) Does the mini-mart/gas station -want- to sell a buttload of 20oz pops?
If you sell two at $0.75, it means you have to replace it with two. If you sell one at $1.50, replace it with one. If you -want- to be selling a ton of them, by all means, keep the price low. If people wouldn't buy the things for $1.50 (or whatever), they'd lower the price.

b) convenience. You happen to be at a place and are thirsty, so chances are you'll fork over the extra change for that frosty beverage.

I used to do this, too. Or, instead of buying the $1.25 big slam liter, I'd pay $.99 for the 2-liter, drink what I wanted then just pour the rest down the drain.
