It's not important if you have expensive clothes but if you look good, expensive clothing and appearance doesn't correlate everytime.

I don't like shopping and especially shopping for clothes. No chance I will be going to 5 different stores to try on jeans or anything else. When I absolutely must get some new clothes, it's Macy's or Jos. A. Bank, whichever is having a sale. They are right next to each other in the mall.

In general I don't value clothes very much. If someone comments on something I'm wearing, my first thought is it's too flashy and am reluctant to wear it again. I don't notice what other people wear unless there's something really unusual about it (and not in a good way) so I don't like to get clothes which make other people notice.

Also I don't want to buy anything that's "this year's style" because I don't want to get rid of good clothes that I can't wear because they attract attention for being outdated.

Therefore, my wardrobe is about as bland as it could be, which is fine with me.

Jeans: $50-$70
Polos/button downs: $40-$75
Dress shirts: $75-$150
Shoes: $75-$125
T-shirts: $10-$30
Suits: $500 - $800
Coats: $150-$500

My wardrobe isn't that deep though. 90% of the time at work it's a polo or button down with jeans and sneakers. Even when I have to get dressed up it's suit without tie (I despise ties with the fire of a thousand suns).

The big city connection to clothing damage is kind of interesting.

It just means it depreciates faster.

Just like if you live in a cold climate that has salted roads, then cars deteriorate faster.

Jeans, I have a fair amount of Ivy Crew, but bought almost all of them at a Goody's store closing and paid $12/pair. Do have a few Levi's, a pair of Lucky...damned thin denim on those and wore rather quickly.

Shirts....LL Bean for long sleeved or Polo. Most of my short sleeved polo-type are Polo. Buy them because, even wearing them weekly for most of the year, they last for a few years. I've got one, a gray one, that's over 4 years old, but now has fraying around the collar.

Shoes...I'll pay for shoes/boots. Same with coats/jackets. Bought this one 7 years ago and it still is great....wear it most all winter:

But I found this one at the LL Bean outlet in MA for $110 (dk. khaki).....heavy as hell, but should last years (planned on it being my winter boating coat---should block the wind as I fish):

clothes in the US are definitely cheap, I think I'd have a double size wardrobe if I lived there. I just realized why you have walk-in closets.

The big city connection to clothing damage is kind of interesting.
it's mostly because in the urban jungle, you have to move with public transport, walk around more than average, eat on the street and stuff, so you will sit around, brush against walls while avoiding other pedestrians and stuff, this also increases the chance of tearing, and your food can fall on your clothes if you don't have a table. And bird shitting on you is always a possibility.

If you live and work in a small city, you just hop in the car, go to work, and go home for lunch.

Of course if you're a farmer then this bs doesn't matter.

Ugggh...I hate buying clothes. How much I spend is directly related to how fed up I am. I prefer to browse the clearance racks and spend less thqn $10 per item. But if I need something, I just buy the first thing that fits my need.

The only exceptions are shoes and coats. I only buy Merrill shoes and those never go on sale. I know that I'm going to spend $100-150 a pair and I'm ok with that. I also buy a new coat at every season change. I don't set a budget but I try to keep it under $200.

Steve Harvey said "Image is everything... make lasting first impressions without even saying a word" He also said something to the effect of you should dress like you're successful even if you're not.

I get overwhelmingly warm feedback when I wear my Gucci suit, people just treat you different. Not everyone, there are plenty of people who don't give 2 shits about what a person wears. But there are a ton of people who just treat you with more respect and give you their attention when you dress the part. I think Steve takes it a bit far with nothing but suits, but he's definitely one of the best dressed people out there. I wear jeans a good 70% of the time, but a nice suit can do more for you than just about anything.

If I like something I buy it and wear it, I usually don't look too closely to prices.

Normal clothes, like what I wear to school, not much fux given. I just buy what looks good to me

Dress clothes, I get pretty good stuff. All I have right now is Polo blazer, a couple Polo dress shirts and Chaps dress shirts, Polo dress pants and Chaos dress pants, Bostonian dress shoes and a pair of Sperry's, random bow ties and ties, some really nice dress socks from uniqulo.

I'll spend real money on decent shoes, aside from that I really dont care.

Of course, I'm also trying to lose a bunch of weight. I have a special shirt in storage and would like to try it. Dad bought it for me a long time ago, one of those chest hugging ribbed t-shirts, looks good on skinny guys.
I tried wearing it once when I had a little tummy, didnt look good. I intend to fit into it this time next year.

But I wont be buying a whole new wardrobe, I'm not that self-indulgent.

Oh, and for much the same reason as wearing expensive shoes, I prefer good running socks to cheap generic socks.

screw that

My sock routine is very well defined. At the change of season, I throw all of my and lil rudeguy's socks away. Every single pair except the couple dress pairs. Then I buy all new ones. For me its crew length white (whatever premium kind I can find) and for lil rudeguy crew length black. Sorting socks is a breeze and they are always fresh.

I hate old socks!!!!

I'm lucky to find stuff that fits as I am 6'9" tall (that's 2.06m for you metric users), and when I do I value them like gold. Especially after taking a Western Civ class and learning about how families would have exactly three sets of clothing. One clean, one dirty, and one for work and the roles they served. The clean one mainly for job interviews and being buried in.

You average height people don't know how easy you have it.

the main thing is I hate sorting socks. The secondary thing is I love fresh socks. So I spend about $50/year on socks for me and lil rudeguy. For me, its well worth the time saving and the joy of fresh socks.

At the same time, I have jeans that I paid $4 for on the clearance rack at Kohls 5 years ago that I still wear all the time.

And no laces! I'm grown. I shouldn't have to tie my shoe like a 3rd grader (yea...I'm really weird about some stuff)

I do not have set values.
Although if I do not think it is worth the price, I won't buy.

A good pair of shoes is worth the $$$ if you ask me. They are better for your body/feet and usually last longer. I like good footwear.

As for other stuff, some brands I know are well made so I think they are worth the price. Not all are, obviously. It's just a matter of experience, and how much something will be worn, that affects what I am willing to pay.

i agree with this however i find that the slip ons never feel snug enough for me and i constantly think they are gonna come off

they need to make nice looking shoes that use velcro

The solution is simple. Always buy the same color and style of socks. No sorting needed.

exactly what i do. when a sock feels "old" i toss it. i love the feel of new socks..oh yeah.

so i tend to buy socks often and ask for htem for Christmas heh
