How much do you tip delivery men?

OK, so I had four Plasma TV's delivered today. Two 42" and two 50" Boxes are big and bulky, but not overly heavy.

Two guys pulled up in the delivery truck, parked on the side of the road, and wheeled the TV's up the driveway and into the garage with a hand truck, one by one. I offered to move my car out of the driveway so he could back the truck right up to the garage, they declined.

I gave the guy who asked me to sign the delivery receipt a $20 bill and said "There ya go bro, lunch is on me."

I dont know if I am mistaken or not, but I feel like the guy felt it wasn't enough of a tip... His facial response and the way he said "thanks" didnt seem like he was pleased.

I thought a $20 tip is actually way more than necessary for two people who were there no more than 10 minutes. Mind you, I didnt even ask them to bring the TV's into the house or take away a box or anything; all they had to do was drop them in the garage. I was going to give a tenner, but then figuring the retail total was over $10k, I gave the $20 tip instead.

Is $20 an appropriate tip here? Too much? Too little? Thoughts?

PS Before I get flamed for posting a "bragging thread" let me clarify: None of the TV's are mine. I do computer/network work for the store that sells them, and he sells me appliances at cost. All four of these TV's are for friends and family of mine.

What the hell are you tipping delivery guys for? It's their fvcking job to deliver the ******. What the hell do they need tips for. They aren't serving you food.

a cold bottle of water usually. or a coke.

I think that is pushing it a little bit too far... Some kind of monetary generosity is standard in this country for delivery men. Whether its pizza or furniture, they want to get paid.

I wasn't aware of that even being a tip based job

me neither

Wow.. Well, the guys clipboard had a $5 bill pinned to it... Im assuming they leave that in clear view so that people "get the hint"

Im pretty sure that delivery people consider it being a "tip based job."

Furniture delivery people get paid regular wage (ie not a crappy wage based on the assumption that they'll be tipped). They also don't drive their own vehicle, I don't really see why they'd expect a tip.

If someone is doing work that usually makes them hot or quite tired, I'd offer food and/or drinks. Otherwise it's just a few bucks.

If I was hauling sh!t around all day, I'd be far happier to get a small snack or a drink and a 5 minute break to relax than get a small amount of money.

It's not.
Only morons tip delivery guys. You already paid for the service and they sure as hell don't get paid $2/hour.

I wasn't charged a delivery fee.

But thanks for calling me a moron... 🙂

I offer them beer.

What a splendid idea, do you offer them a couple of brewskys for the road as well?

Wonderful.. Guys in a 14' box truck full of heavy crap driving around my town drunk.. Id rather give them $40

Depends on how far they go with the job. Whenever a delivery is setup, the company that does the job is required to move the product to a minimum point, sometimes it's a curbside drop, sometimes they have to move it into the house. If they go above and beyond that minimum, then yeah I'll flip em a $10 for their extra efforts. I had a washer/dryer delivered once, the guys brought them down into my basement, and hooked them both up for me, didn't charge for the hoses either. They got $20 from me, for the 20 minutes they were there.

what about places that offer free delivery?

It was free delivery... They normally charge $50, but he waives the fee for me.

Well, I guess I dont feel bad about not tipping enough.. Since it looks like most concur that tipping dlvy people is not mandatory..

Thanks ATOT!

My rule is if the delivery person offers to take your heavy ass item upstairs then they deserve a tip. If they're just rolling it off the truck with a dolly then why the hell would I tip them?

A tip is for service above and beyond what is expected, not just for doing what your supposed to do.

I have never been in that situation. However, this one time after the Insight guy was done installing a new cable modem, we had a beer. He said it was his last stop, but it was at 2:30PM. I didn't care. 😀
