Buffet? 10%.
Restaurant? 20-25%
Bar? 30-40%

you'd be amazed that I can walk into just about any establishment and be treated like royalty. Frequently eating or drinking for free.

i like it.

If you are tipping that much, it's not really free is it?:D

Buffet = zero unless they do something more than bring drinks.

And like Vic, I live in Oregon where ALL employees must be paid minimum wage, there is no tipping exclusion.

I wasn't aware you needed to tip at a Buffet. I only do if it is necessary for someone to bring me something. In a buffet situation I'll give the guy that comes around and pics up plates a couple bucks, he does more work than anyone else in the house besides possibly the cooks.

Seriously why pay someone that just comes by to ask if everything is OK?

man...some of your people are cheap....and some are very generous. But really, if it's good service then they deserve some extra ~20% Bad service would be around %10. I don;t like tipping just because society says so but because I know they make next to nothing...

Then again, at a typical chili's, a waiter/waitress probably handles 6-10 tables and they're be a new group every 1.5 hrs or less. Even f they tables are cheap dirt bags and only leave maybe $3, that's 3X(6-10) for every hr or so. $18-$30 for 1hr to 1.5hr's of work?

i can't belive people tip at buffet's and i can't believe people tip when they order at the "to go" window at a restaurant... what did the workers do to deserve it? put my food in a bag and throw some napkins and forks in it? hand me a tray to put my plate on?

umm, 10%?

IIRC, tipping for good service at a buffet is supposed to be 5 to 10%, depending on the level of service given (drinks? clearing away dirty plates?)
So, anywhere from $5 to $10 would be appropriate for a $90 bill.

why should i tip at a buffet?

yeah i know they only make a few dollers an hour. Thats NOT MY PROBLEM.

I will tip if a waitress does a good job. but i won't feel bad about NOT tipping if she sucks.

you know... i went to cheesecake factory once and the waiter was a total asshole... so when i get my check, i write on his receipt a zero in the tip section and a note on the top saying he was rude and didnt deserve it....

then i check the cc statement it said $67; the bill was $57 w/o the tip.. the fvcker wrote a 1 in front of the zero and changed the 5 into a 6... me and my gf bitched at the manager like hell when we saw that.

from now on even if a server is remotely rude i deduct from their tip.. and i now have to write huge X's in the tip section when no tip is needed

I'd say it's rare to carry that many tables at once. What most people seem to forget as well is that the wait staff have to come early and stay late to prepare and clean up. The whole time they are doing that they making sub 2 dollars an hour pre-tax.

I used to be part owner in a restaurant, the people came at least an hour early to prep everything and stayed over an hour after the people left to clean up as well, you have to average the amount they make during the rush hours over the entire shift, it isn't a constant high hourly rate.

I had something like this happen at applebees or was it ruby tuesdays? hmm anyway.

the waitress was really really bad. I was paying with a Credit card adn the bill was like $70 or so. I put "ZERO" in the tip amount.

Well the next day the credit card amount was $5 more then the bill. We called up and complained. The manager looked up the actual reciept just to make sure. he invited us in for dinner and to bring in proof that it was overcharged. We ended up getting the $5 cash PLUS a free dinner (around $50 we went all out!) he also gave us $25 in gift card.

Yea I know what you mean, that's why I don't write zero but a line right through the tip line.

Many, many nights I have stayed three hours over or longer just trying to get everything cleaned up and the silverware rolled for the next shift, all while making $2.13 an hour. Most of the time we will have four tables to deal with as well, not 6 - 10 unless it is extremely slow. It can be good money, but it is not guaranteed like other jobs. I know when I have bad service, and if I were to be falling behind I would not expect much if anything for a tip, but many people are just flat out stingy. Then you have people come in who are generous and leave a nice tip, and this will make any servers day. Be nice, tip well. I sure as hell do when I go out to eat.

Waiters = overpaid.

For a job that one can get as a high school dropout, they should not be complaining about making as much as they do with the tips included.

I usually tip from $0.05~25%. At buffets $1.

$0.05 if I have to ask twice about getting water, ask twice and still end up going to the back and asking for a refill on my water, and ask twice and still have to go to the sushi bar to get a take out box. Or at the Cracker Barrel where we sat for 20min before they took our order, didn't bring the free corn bread, never ask about refills on drinks, forget our bill, and the food was cooled by the time we got it.

25% if our drinks get refilled before they are empty, food comes at the proper intervals (I HATE it when they bring the entrees while the appetizers are still here), plates are cleared as soon as they are empty etc. Last time it was at a Spanish restraunt on South St in Philly, the food and the atomshpere was great. (The check was about $200 so we left a $50 tip on that one).

Honestly, I think restaurants should pay people more and charge a little more for food, than make people pay tip. It just seems kind of stupid. I think people should work hard because that's their friggin job, not just to scam an extra few bucks from someone.

At regular restaurants, I will tip around 20%. I don't eat at the buffet much but about 1 to 2 bucks per person. I NEVER ever not tip, maybe that's why I never have horrible bad service/server.

I think restaurants should pay better to their employee's and not expect tips. The markup on food is like fricken 400%. Im not going to tip someone 5 dollars on a 15 dollar meal because the restaurant they work at is to cheap to pay them what they deserve. If they are good workers the restaurant should take it out of the owners pocket and put it in the workers, not expect poor a$$holes like myself to spend his hard earned money paying the restaurtants employees so the restaurant doesn't have to.

I tip when my g/f makes me, or when someone is above average in taking care of me. If they are average or worse I may tip a dollar and change, which I feel is more then enough. If you waiters don't like it, get a new job.

Oh, and I also don't like to tip pizza delivery guys, because Im pretty sure I already get charged extra for deliver, its not my fault the pizza place doesn't give that money to the delivery guys. Again, Im not going to pay someone elses wages because their employer is to much of an asshat to do so.

Alright. You Tip after your meal is complete so how is the server suppose to you know you're gonna tip ? and provide good/bad service ?

They are suppose to provide good service and a Tip is suppose to be a reward.
If they don't provide the service, they don't deserve any tip except a tip via word of mouth.

A good server, has your drinks filled up. And asks you if everything is to the customers liking and checks on the table several times throughout the meal.

Oh and when I do get good service I tip 15-20%
