I just got quoted $105 for everything, including springs & labor.. Does that sound about right?

I had one spring replaced last year and it cost about $100. I'd say you're getting a steal. (But who knows, maybe the place that did it raked me over the coals)

That's a good deal.

If you want to try it yourself, it's really easy to do. Those springs are like $15 at Menards, and color coded by weight.

was gonna do it myself.

I was too, but I was telling my Father-In-Law (another DIY'er) and he told me it was worth it to have someone else do it, because apparently it is easy to lose a finger doing it.

Are the springs pre-tensioned? Otherwise, how do you do this?

Cost me $750 to get 4 new springs and my garage door completely redone. I had some antiquated spring and pulley system that they didn't make anymore.

Yeah, springs are a DIY unless you have a sectional door. Then its professionals only!

So what springs are you talking about? The ones that hang on the sides of the door or the mechanism that goes across the top?

I figured you meant the side ones, which are easy. Have a pro do the top ones - they're dangerous.

What type of springs? Torsion spring where the spring runs across the top of the door? Yes, easy to get yourself hurt, but not a big deal if you have proper leverage.
Plain ole tension spring? the spring runs front to back towards the opener. Easy job. Open the door all the way, detach the cable that ties the door to the springs, lower door, replace springs. Profit. Be sure to take a couple pictures of the way the cables are run. Easy to forget if you've never done it before.

One of those big springs that is on the side of my garage door broke a while back. It's actually just hanging there, but the door still goes up and down.....although it's probably not all that safe. I'd like to replace this myself if it's not a big deal.

those overhead ones arn't that bad, I've installed 2 of those types myself and tensioning the spring wasnt that big of a deal, just needed 2 1/2" diameter steel rods and some patience, its actually fairly easy. Did them myself too, would of been better with help tho. Just take your time with the springs and its fine.

That's what happened to mine. I was stressing the motor so much that it started smoking.

I have the Split doors (like 2 small ones) and the spring that broke is the spring that hangs over the left track.. Is that easy to replace?

Any suggestions on a good DIY website? Going to see if I can change the garage door myself ... we got one of old clanky ones.
