Splurge one time and do it and see how it feels. I am very materialistic and covet items and stuff. I don't own a property to renovate though I will have a condo soon. But a good trip is worth every penny. If I had an extra grand laying around and I had to choose a 3rd pair of high end headphones vs a trip, I'd choose the trip over the stuff.

The memories are priceless. Especially if you go with an SO. It's something to do together that creates a foundation for a healthier relationship through shared experiences.

Oh I've been on some, and it's great, but it's just not something I could justify doing every year.

Family of 4 and we don't do anything more expensive than Disney so that's about $5k. We spend way less than that most years though. We only go away 1 or 2 weeks a year just before school starts up in Sept.

We do weekends here and there for travel hockey but get reimbursed because of coaching. 2 nights can net $600 - crazy.

average about 10k.
We do one big one, some thing like 3 - 5k, and then 2 other between 1 - 2k. Then ever other year or so a trip to India which costs 10k+ in itself. So averages out to about 10k per year...

About 20k to 30k a year if you include shopping. Single trip to Asia can run $10-15k. But I'm trying to vacation for cheap this year. I'm going to utilize the free vacation homes of family and friends and stay at cheap hotels and do some cheap local vacations.

My daughter is about to turn 2; I haven't had a vacation in, well, 2 1/2 years. :p
My kids are getting spoiled because we've been taking more. Seriously, you've got a few years where can travel off-season. Take advantage of it. My oldest starts school in the Summer or Fall of this year (depending on the school she gets into). January, early May, and mid-late September are great times to take trips. Take your daughter to Disney World, the beach, the mountains....once school starts, you're going to be stuck travelling the busy times with everyone else...

did you already catch your unicorn? ie that one vacation of a lifetime where you got to be everything you wanted to be?

mine was oktoberfest 2014. 10 days: partied all day every day, slept in a tent. german beer tastes like medicine, there's a special oktoberfest formula. and then i went to amsterdam for a month, was high the entire time. must have fucked like 15-20 girls, some more than once. old, young, skinny, full, knockers, legs, squirters, shakers. this one girl played her violin on me, you're not supposed to do that on the clock. i've had great vacations since but that one trip was it.

Possibly I'd say it was when I went to Halifax maybe like 7ish years ago, and best of all it was mostly free. Won an award with my company and they flew me there. It was also my first time on a plane so that was a bonus too. Honestly I was probably more excited about that than the actual award lol. It was short though, I'd visit there again as a normal vacation. There was just lot of neat stuff to check out and we only really scratched the surface given our limited time.

Though one thing I want to do one of these days is sky diving. That would probably be me true "unicorn" vacation.

Probably 15-20K a year, possibly more....I'd hate to actually tally it. Averaging two big international trips a year plus a domestic/close international trip every quarter.

2016: Cancun, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, NYC, Barcelona, Paris, London, DC, and Tucson.

2017 (taken and planned): Playa Del Carmen, Maui, Vegas/Sedona, New Orleans, Austin, Hong Kong/Singapore/Sydney/Melbourne.

I'm trying my best to resist a Barcelona trip this year but AA started seasonal direct service from ORD and the fares are reasonable. Must. Resist.

I applaud everyone's budget maximization. I am going skiing in Park City with my family (2 adults and 3 kids) for spring break and it will cost more than most people seem to be spending a year.

1-4k all expenses. 1-2x per year... usually random places but mainly staying in the states. This year it's kentucky. I like to visit the state parks and such. Nature stuff.

About $15 for the several RedBox videos and some popcorn for a day on my couch. Other than the occasional long weekend on the couch I haven't had a vacation in 4 years. I'm really hoping to next year. Looking to spend 3-4 weeks in Thailand.

We're spending probably $7k-$8k going to Greece and Italy this summer for about two weeks. Beyond that, we probably won't spend much this year. That will probably be our only "big" vacation. We'll do some weekend trips up north, to Chicago, or various places for weddings, but I don't really count that.

smart man. i've done enough sightseeing to know that 90% of the time it's just as fulfilling seeing it on a good tv, and a lot easier too. food, you can get anywhere and it's close enough.

south asia is cheap. banquets and hookers at the $20 level

that leaves about 20 bucks for 2 weeks of food. did you steal or freeload off relatives?

edit: n/m read it incorrectly. not bad

a typical round trip ticket from lax to europe will be $1500 in the summer. though last year i found a ticket from wow! airlines for $800 with just a quick stop in iceland. it's literally a bus ticket, you get nothing beyond a seat and a ride.

sorry, my bad. As you can see my gramma sucks.

The plane ticket and hotel was paid together. The 1.5k is spending money :)

People say food is cheap in H/K I can tell you now it is not!!! It's the same in the UK. The exchange rate is not as good years ago, now it's nearly evens. Of course you can eat cheap but prepared to have daily anus check ups. The msg and fake ingredients is to much :D

usually in the summer I go to the sea (Europe and in the past north africa), last summer I didn't though.

Other kind of tourism is totally random. I went to prague in october for a week, other years visited stuff in the spring (sicily and tunisia), or hot countries in the middle of winter.

I like to travel at least once a year otherwise I feel like I'm missing out on opportunities to see new stuff.

Different strokes. Even with some pretty great pictures its not close to the same for us. Plus there are often little\unexpected things that you miss out on that often make the trip more special

Points, upgrades, promo codes can really help stretch money

You guys are rich. I think I spent about $1000 over the past FIVE YEARs on vacations for my family of four, so about $200 per year. Usually a trip to San Diego or Vegas, but once I went to San Francisco. Usually stay with friends or at Motel Six.

i did motel 6/super 8's for years, but finally got baller enough to afford staying at hampton inns most everywhere i go. the super comfy beds and delicious hot breakfasts with unlimited sausage and bacon are worth an extra 80$ a day to me.

I have Cancun, Seattle, Hong Kong, Macau, Saigon, Danang, San Francisco, and Ensenda all back to back starting April 20th. I'm not looking forward to checking my credit card statements afterwards lol....
