You know, the manual for my truck says the tank capacity is 21.9 gallons. I have never once filled up past the 18 gallon mark at the gas station, even when I run my car till the gas light comes on (from Empty).

Is this normal?

When my light comes on I still have 2-3 gallons left. Probably the same for yours.

I think I have it down right on mine, I have 3.5 gallons left when the light comes on.

Zero, because I don't have a money-pit, I mean I don't have a car. 😀 However, a monthly MetroCard in NYC is now $70, IIRC, which is, I suppose, comparable (though I don't have to pay subway insurance, hahaha).

My other half has to do that... ~$150/mo. for LIRR and NYC Subway monthly. It costs me gas to drive her to the LIRR... 😀

I drive ~950 miles a month. At 32 mpg that is 29.7 gallons per month. At $1.50 average that comes to $44.53 a month.

Its great not to ever have to worry about the price of gas - since each fill up is nothing when you get 32 mpg. If I were Nyical, I'd ditch the truck and get a good car and save $200 a month. Thats $2500 a year extra just to drive a different vehicle. Lets say Nyical uses each vehicle for 5 years. The savings in that period would be $12500. That is almost enough for a free car every 5 years for life. Hmm (a) never paying for a vehicle again and getting a free one every 5-6 years or (b) driving something that looks a bit different.

No doubt. If I had to drive < 15 miles a day back and forth to work, I'd get any car I like regardless of gas mileage. But if it's a greater distance than that each day, the money saved is far more important than driving a feel-good car everyday.

V6 SUV that gets a rated 12/15mpg. Junking a 4-banger '90 Accord.

<--- looking for a commuter car on the side.

around $180 to $200 a month for 2 cars. my Jetta gets around 25 to 28 mpg (mostly city driving) but my SUV gets around 13 to 15 mpg. i've been driving my SUV a lot lately because i just put in a $1000 sound system, so i've been spending more.
