How much $$$ do you save?

I was just on mint.com and checking out my purchases + savings last year... I ended up saving about 20% of my income.

How about you?

I'm a little cleaned out right now after some big expenses in december and trying to pay off my CC, but I try to save 10%/year not counting my 401K.

10% contribution to 401k, 10% to discount stock purchase (gross/pre-tax deductions)
0-5% variable to play-money stock account

so from 20-25%, depending on how much money i squander per month

ehh, I don't know if y'all should include 401k employer contribution as part of it. Your own contribution, yes, but not your employer's contribution. That's more like salary methinks.

I have no budget, so I don't know the percentage. I have what I can only call an "accumulation" which I might keep back for old age or might blow on scratch-offs tomorrow.

You just made me want to buy something... I am 18, I can buy scartch-its! 😀 YAY!!!

I save nothing? I don't have an income.

More than probably 90% of people my age, but about half as much as I'd like.

It's between 15% & 20%.

It's nice to throw around percents, but it really goes to show how they aren't everything.

A household making $8000 a month net and saving 20% is just as much as somebody making $3000 a month and saving 50%.

I spent my entire savings to clear my CC debt, and am currently trying to pay off my car by Fall this year (still ~2 years till payoff.)

Right now savings is not as important as getting rid of bad debt. 🙁

Actually, you would be down $100 a month by having $3000 income and only saving %50.

Hrmm....

6% to my Roth 401k
5% to my wife 401k
5% to my ESPP
and roughly 25% of my wife's take home is put into an actual savings account.

After being unemployed for the previous 5 months, traveling overseas and moving across the country, my savings is now ~60% of what it was. 🙁

But chances are the household making 8K a month is living alot more lavishly than the 3K/month household, so that 20% isn't gonna get them as far as the 50% the 3K family is saving.

Think about that for a second.

That household making that much money can easily give up an expensive car payment or downsize to a smaller house and easily pick themselves up.

The family making less doesn't have as much wiggle room.

I add into my savings every year the profit sharing I get from work as well as my $2K 401K match.

With those included my savings score is around 60% after tax.

Wish I made $100K a year. 🙁
