How much do you pay for rent?

For someone making 50k, how much is a reasonable amount to spend on rent for a 1 BR apartment? My friends think I'm crazy for wanting to spend $1k/month on rent.. I think that's the average price I've seen in the decent areas in San Diego. It gets up to $1200+ in La Jolla area for 1 BR. So am I crazy to want to spend $1000/month on rent? Of course I could always get a room mate but I prefer living alone.

I pay $350/mo for a house, but I'm basically housesitting for my uncle while his house is for sale.

Typical here is $500-550 for 1br and $650 for 2br.

About $450/month for one of three bedrooms in a townhouse near UCSD. I jumped on it after spending 2 years in a studio in Hillcrest for $800/month. It's funny how terrible roommates can make even the cheapest rent seem like a scam...

Depends entirely where you're living at. The Rent+Water for my apartment is just shy of 860. With the electric bill, its usually around 1000 in the summer.

Ironically a few blocks away, I could get an apartment thats a around 550, but its not as nice as where I am.

Seattle, Greenlake area, 2BR/2BA is >$1300/mo and expected to go up more.

My roommate and I pay $1400 and I miss Columbus, OH for cheap rent.

Wow, I've got a very nice, modern 2bd/1b apartment thats 500 inclusive (internet and utils included) within a 5 minute walk of my classes, I feel lucky.

$775 split between two people for a 3 bedroom, large fenced yard, garage, hardwood floors in a nice and central part of town. And I have 3 dogs(ones a dane) and a cat,
I worked out a spiel to launch into when calling every available house to explain how nice the dogs are.

Really income has no bearing on rent.

$1k a month would be a steal here. I had a tiny 1br/1bath unit near the beach here for $650 from a private owner. A similar unit in a commercial apartment building would have been about $1200. Now for $1200 you can rent many houses in a 20 mile circle from here, also at more than 5 times that some 2/2's would be out of range.

With a rental things like where your apartment is makes the biggest difference, then things like where your parking is (and if it's assigned), how many people you live around, soundproofing, etc make a HUGE difference. Also how the apartment is kept and how prompt the landlord is.

In my last rental my landlord lived next to me until it sold to another owner for the last 1 year I lived there. He was a good landlord, but it was his first go at it so he did some things that intruded on us.

You can take the exact same apartment and place it in Palm Beach vs Shreveport and you would be looking at a difference measured in multiples.

I've got a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom duplex with a basement and washer/dryer hookup for $475 a month.

Central Wisconsin is pretty cheap.

I pay 700/mo all utilities included except heat... 2be/1ba - no roommate. It's great. It's a small house behind another. The owners dont mind if I have a bunch of friends over as long as I don't make a scene.

I wanna buy a duplex soon and rent the other half. I live in south jersey.

$450/mo for a 1 bedroom place. At the risk of sounding cheap, I think that's too much... partially because once I move out I have nothing to show for it. Can't wait until I can justify buying a house, but I'd rather be patient and try to make some headway so I don't end up in the bad situation a lot of other people have gotten themselves in.

1490 for a 2 BR, 1 Ba apt. Split with my roommate. I used to pay 2250 for a newer 2 Br... disgusting prices. La Jolla is expensive. You should look to live somewhere else. It's too much of an old community and it's not like you NEED to be there. Move somewhere slightly cheaper.

Back in Orlando I was paying $15,000/year for my 3/3 condo in one of the nicest/cleanest suburbs (Maitland).

Here in TN I am paying $7,500/year for a 3/2 brick home on an acre of land.

It just depends on where you are living. Back home in Chicago I would be paying maybe $20,000/year for this same home in a nice suburb there.

Can you afford it? Is it really going to make you happier than a cheaper or shared place? If both your answers are yes, that's not too much to pay. What others pay has no bearing. Your own rental market, your budget, and what makes you personally happy is what matters.

I wouldn't think you're crazy, by the way, assuming it still allows your finances to be in good shape.

a little under 800 a month for a 2br/2ba apt

anything less than a grand a month is SD has got to be in a scary location unless you are splitting a place...

I don't even wanna think about it yet, rent in Singapore will be expensive. But, on the plus side I'll have all the services.

Washington, DC NW: $960/month for ~300 sq.-ft. studio (includes water).
Gas+Electricity: $34/month average in 2007.
Verizon DSL: $35/month.

Total: $1029/month

(Keep in mind I have no garage, no central heat/air, no in-unit washer/dryer, no dish washing machine, and no sink disposal...all in a circa. 1920s-era building.)
