The definition of Irony: A begger standing under a McDonalds billboard that says "Now Hiring" while the begger is holding a sign that says "Will work for food".

HELLO McFLY!

I tell 'em I work for my money and I expect them to as well. So I ask them to tell me a joke... if it's a good joke, I'll give em a buck. If it sucks, I'll give 'em a quarter for the effort.

yeah /the "will work for food" is just BS......say you need some help lifting some boxes "oh i hurt my back" ask if they can help you paint your house..."oh i've got arthritis" and they don't want your food, just your $$......most make more in a month pan-handling than i do working at my min-wage fast food job!

they had a show on i think 20/20 or such. But they stated that professional beggers can make close to 100k a year.

i dont think that could be right. but it wouldnt suprise me if they make a bunch.

Depends. Most of the time somewhere from 1-10 bucks. I give money to people who really deserve it. At Subway the other night there was a poor old guy working until 2AM by himself. He was an immigrant and was working his ass off. I went to the ATM and got 40 bucks and gave it to him. He had a wife and kids so I know he will need it.

You gave him $40 as well? :Q

I used to give a quarter sometimes.

Now I give em nothing. It started getting absolutely insane with the begging in Orlando while I was there. Then I saw a special on TV about how they did a study of how much all the panhandlers on the street are raking in and it worked out that the average beggar is making over $20 an hour because a lot of the Japanese tourists give em $5 or more. This is in an area where the median family income is below $30K -- the beggars are more wealthly than most of the rest of the population.

I have to wonder what people are thinking when I see em giving dollar bills to beggars wearing immaculately clean $200+ shoes and expensive fur coats on the subway in NYC.

I had one guy who absolute stunk of alcohol come up and ask me for money. "I'm don't drink so I won't waste it on alcohol. I swear! [hiccough]"

99% of the time I just keep walking.

You do realize most of them (heard that in a movie in psych class, not 100% positive though) are schizophrenics right? They may not be ABLE to hold a job...plus where would they send the check, and how could he fill out the application w/out a home address etc...I think some people just assume they are lazy, which isnt always true.

I know some are just lazy, but not a lot of them.
