how much do phone covers really cost?

I never buy them from the cellular store usually through amazon or ebay. Looking through my desk I have 10+ covers. Most I bought for 10-$25 on amazon and some real cheap ones on ebay. How much they cost, especially the cheap tpu covers that go for $8-$10 on amazon that I can get from china for $2, though I never feel like waiting the 3 weeks for that china shipping.

Well, being mostly cheap plastic, I would assume pennies.

The short answer: not nearly as much as you pay for them... but that doesn't tell the whole story.

These companies still don't make tons of money, because they only sell so many cases. Just walk into a phone accessory store, for example: you'll see dozens of cases, but the odds are that only a handful of those ever sell in significant numbers. You need that $5 piece of silicon to cost $20 because you may only ever sell 20,000 of them.

Pennies on the dollar, but I can guarantee by Otter Box has saved me quite a bit of cash in the long run.

I would think that the silcon ones cost less than a dollar to make. The apple "leather" ones probably around $5.

Someone has to design the cases in CAD and then the mold has to be made and then the machines have to be run to make the case.

If you mean just the quantity of plastic, probably a few cents. But there's all that cost above.
