No such thing as jaw realignment. Not without major surgery that is.

When they correct an overbite or underbite with braces all they're doing is moving the teeth - sometimes canting them forward or backward.

Retainers keep your teeth from going back to what they were when the braces treatment is done. They are removable and made of plastic and metal. They don't hurt quite as much, but kinda impair your speech. The way it worked for me is I had to wear it all day for a year, then only at night for pretty much the rest of my life (he said at least until my wisdom teeth were in all the way). Well I haven't worn it much and I'm paying for it now.

Mine are going to cost $5000 to fix my crossbite and crooked teeth. Most of the people I know did it for around $5000 too.

during my teen years i went through a period where my jaws would make a crackling noise everytime i chew. i suspect that during that time as my entire set of teeth were growing in, it shifted my jaws a bit. right now if i try to grit my teeth together, the molars on my right side can touch each other but there's a little bit of gap between the top and bottom molars on the left side.

I don't understand how some say invisalign won't fix bigger problems. They have pictures proving they fix even the worst problems. They cost $5000 according to my DDS and after my insurance, I'm paying half out of pocket. It should take 9-12 months... and what's best is that you should have the last insert to keep so you can stick that back in if you feel you need it. Like a retainer.

The ones on their site aren't that bad... I need braces to basically expand my upper set of teeth and contract my lower one. The orthodontist said Invisalign wouldn't work with something like that.

Also, your insurance might be tricky dicky and would label anything dental or orthodontal as "cosmetics" like my ppo :).

Invislign can't fix over and underbites. If you have a tooth growing out in the wrong direction like one on top of the gum instead of the bottom it can't fix that either. Only metal braces can. You need rubber bands, and chains for these. Invisalign lacks the ability to use these.

What happens when your jaw gets misaligned is the same thing that happens when you get a slipped disc in your back. There is actually a "disc" that provides a pivot point between your jaw and the bottom of your skull. That disc can slip foward and you get a clicking or popping noise when you bite or open your mouth. This is a version of TMJ. Other things can happen, like inflamation or trauma to the area that would cause TMJ too.

I have it - to a mild degree. It wasn't bad enough to warranty surgery so I live with it. The doctor told me the disc's don't normally slip back into place.
