How much do medium-large Chiquita bananas weigh (#4011)? How about Sunkist large navels (#4012)?

Here are two story problems to make it easier: Do 3 medium-large bananas weigh .5 pounds or 1.4 pounds? Do 3 large navels weigh 1 pound or 2 pounds?

I have a good reason for asking, please respond!

Bananas are usually ~1/2 lb, oranges roughly ~2/3 lb

Now that you have an answer, tell us the good reason for the question :)

With peel on or peeled? Either way I have no idea.

A dissenting opinion!

Is anyone sure of their answer?

I ask because the produce scales at my grocery consistently give the smaller weights but when I go to check out I get the higher weights. It roughly adds a pound to the weights.

I think his answers were for each banana or orange.

Correct. I was speaking for each individual fruit.

Produce scales are notoriously incorrect. I would trust the electronic scales much more than the produce scales.

Oh okay okay. I figured they weren't very accurate but there are like 6 there and they're pretty consistent, so it seems strange.

Are you sure about this? The supermarket scales usually only go up to 5lbs, that's more than 100% error rate from your numbers.

I would think the scale at the register has to be calibrated, but the scales back in the produce aisles do not.

They have probably rigged the scales to rip you off. If you really care, why not go weigh your fruit on your own scales?

Or they're measuring in kilograms, and aren't too far off.

AFAIR, the scales you see hanging in the produce department are non-calibrated. The scales at the checkout, however, absolutely have to be calibrated in accord with your states regulations laid out by their department of weights and measures.

Seems like we usually had a dude in every 3 months or so checking out our checkout scales at Kroger...

My own scales? I don't even have one scale, which is why I made this thread :)

Why wouldn't you just go to the store and weigh them yourself?

Do people really use those scales? If I want oranges and bananas I just go and buy oranges and bananas.

I don't use them for oranges and bananas but sometimes for other things. I just tested the scales with oranges and bananas 'cause that's what I was buying.
