HOW much difference in performance is there between the 9800 and 9800 pro?

I'm pretty sure the drivers display both np and pro as pro. Easy solution...Check the clock speeds, I would recommend Rage3d tweak, but there are other overclocking tweaks. Or you could just check the speeds under your 3DMark results.

My 9800 NP says its a Pro under windows too....it's wrong. Get some sort of OC'ing software and check out your core and mem speeds there. I checked mine via Riva Tuner and sure enough it was clocked at the NP speeds even though Win XP thinks it's a Pro.

Good luck...

I would try exchanging it at BB a few times and see if you get the better ram

buy the time you fit it with ram sinks you might as well have just spent that extra money on a pro

thats the stupid thing about aftermarket cooling on a video card like that. People end up spending so much on the cooler, they could have had a better card to begin with.

Personally, if I can't overclock on stock cooling. I dont overclock at all

I get me barton to 3200+ on stock cooling with no voltage adjustments rock solid stability.

Download this its all you need to overclock and flash your nonpro into a pro if its possible + they blow the cat drivers out the window Click Me Now! I saw a 40% performance increase acrossed the boards in all OpenGL games and a 20% increase in D3D games people are not joking when they say these drivers own. BTW I only have a 9600pro and thats the increase I got you may get more.

it's not pro. Not only that, Infineon chips ( even though rated at 333 Mhz ) are the worst overclockers in the 9800 family. Sorry to tell you this, but most likely you will not brake 330Mhz on those chips without seeing some visual artifacts. Flashing it might actually make it worse since the pro BIOS bums the voltage on the memory, which overheats very easily.

Don't think they charge you much if any to return the product for the same type. In case you want to try to get better ram. They need to list these kind of things and then will get less returns :p

Just think if all the IDIOTS that did this happened to stop. We would have lower prices and less hassles returning stuff when it is really broke.

i think this card really rocks as it is....i am not a benchmarker and i really dont think i will see the difference in 12 extra frams per second in a game that is already running over 100 fps with all the eye candy turned on

There's a guy selling Ram Sinks on the For Sale/Trade board for 50 cents a piece (shipped, with adhesive), if anybody's interested.
That would be $4 for a set for a 9800np. Hardly enough money to upgrade to a better card. :)
Search for "Sinks".

those are interesting results you got...considering that the Omega drivers are geared toward improved IQ and not performance. did you switch over from the cat 3.7s? or were you running older cat drivers before?

I am new to the ATI camp. What's the diff b/t "Omega drivers" and the Catalyst drivers?

Is it like NVidia's WHQL-certified drivers?

Omega drivers are 3rd party drivers that some guy makes, he basically takes the newest released drivers and adds tweaks for IQ, speed, and other things that may have been in older drivers, but for some reason got left out of the newer release. I've used the Omega ATI and Nvidia drivers and they rock.

5-10 frames maybe. More noticeable difference in high resolutions well above 1024 x 768 .
