How much did you pay for your first year's auto insurance?

BD2003

I get the feeling Im going to get gouged pretty bad. I'm 24, lifelong new yorker. I've always just walked or taken the subway to wherever I need to go...its that urban around here.

I'm about to move to long island, and for the first time in my life, I actually NEED a car. Unfortunately, being the idiot that I am, I never got around to getting my license several years ago, because I knew I wasnt going anywhere for years.

So I should have my license next month, hoping to get a car around may, right after my birthday, because Ive been told that insurance is a lot lower when youre over 25. I'm fully expecting to be gouged for over 3k for the first 6 months...Ive tried online calculators, and Ive been quoted anywhere from 12k a year to 1.2k a year. I've been told on the phone not to trust the number, because I dont have a license, but no insurance company was willing to give me a hypothetical quote.

All that being said, how much did you get nailed for your first year of driving, specifically if youre an older, first time driver?

If you would have gotten your license three years ago, you'd qualify for a good driver discount, since you haven't gotten in any accidents or recieved any tickets in the last three years. They don't actually check to see if you drove anywhere during that time.

As a new driver though, no good driver discount for you.

Yeah, I know, but how much is that discount exactly? Are we talking 10% or 100%?

depends on your driving history, location, and the car

my first year of paying on my own (at the age of 22 after driving for 6 yrs under parents insurance) was ~950/yr IIRC

I was 17 around $265/mo for the first year.

Then it dropped to $180/mo after having 1 year of CONTINUOUS insurance coverage with no tickets/accidents.

I'm 18, and ever since 16 years old my auto insurance has been $100 or so a month, and that's with full coverage too.

Just curious but how could you have gone that long without a photo ID?

Learner's permit. My parents didnt have a car either, so I wouldnt have been driving anything anyway.

A learner's permit in New York is a valid photo ID?

My first year was in 1976,
how can I remember/.?

New drivers insurance is going to be expensive.
No matter what your age..

Take any drivers safety course you can, check the local AAA!

I had my permit at 16,took drivers ed at summer school,
and got my Unrestricted drivers license a week after i turned 17.

Yeah if you live in NY City why bother with a car,
if you live near Albany NY and want to live more than a mile from work, you damn well better drive.

The local bus service around here is not the best, especially if you have to work odd hours.

It looks practically identical to a drivers license, other than the fact that it says learners permit instead.

Got my license 6 months after my 18th birthday (didn't get a car until around then, so no need to get it at 16), dad paid insurance for a year, and now I've been on my own since September. My car was totalled in August (rear-end collision, I was not at fault obviously), so I didn't have a car until I found another one to buy a month later. Unfortunately that meant I wasn't insured (since the coverage on the old car had just expired anyway), so my rates right now are a little higher than they will be when I renew again.

20 years old, paying by the half-year, $662 for liability only. I know it'll drop by at least $100 when I renew because of having been insured continuously (because of quotes I'd done online).

In California, a learners permit is jsut a peice of paper that's issued by the DMV, and it expires after 6 months. It doesn't have a photo or anything, and it's not valid as an ID.

In Maryland you can walk into the DMV and go "Give me an ID" and they'll snap you one. Looks SIMILAR TO a DL, but doesn't entitle you to driving. It's a quick in and out deal.

I paid about $900 per year or so, but that was around 1979 I think. That was a ton of cash to me at the time.

Ah. So it will still have your current address and age but just doesn't give you driving privilages? I was just thinking of countless times I've need my license for ID and I'm only 22.

Hmm. I think it was about $2300 a year. Full coverage on a '91 Accord. I was 18. Now its about $1200 a year on the same car tho I dropped collision (~$400 a year). I'm now 22. No tickets/accidents.

CA DMV will also issue these. looks almost exactly like a drivers license, but says "ID Card" or something.
