software development, i'm one level up from the bottom rung now. starting salary at my company is a good 15% lower than it's peers.

i'd still prefer to live in a cheaper city making less. i could halve my salary and still save more in a place like Pittsburgh.

There are tons of software development jobs in Indy. Just a thought....

I don't own a company.

I generate savings at my company. Why should someone who doesn't generate savings get a bonus?

Now, if you generate sales and new money, you deserve a bonus as well.

Because if they didn't, I'd leave. (Assuming, of course, that I could actually find a place to go to first.)

Our company gives out bonuses based on the performance of the company as well as the individual. It makes sense to me.

To answer the OP, I received a bonus that probably moderate compared to my peers, but I feel extrememly lucky in the environment to even have a job, so a bonus is just that.

If my bonus this year is anything like it was last year, I'll be a happy camper.

But it wont be.

bonus? Hahah.

The cops in my parents' small town got something like $5 for every ticket they wrote (personally, not the department). It was well-known that you do NOT speed through there because they were always running radar on the main street. This was 20+ years ago, I've heard they dropped that but I have no knowledge either way.

Hoping for 5% bonus and 5% raise but (both) could be a pipe dream. Just glad to have a job to be honest.

No bonus. Every since they did away with our $200 Christmas bonus three years ago, we get nothing.
Engineering is awesome!

I got 5.5% bonus, 4.4% annual raise. Most of our raises come from passing professional exams or getting promoted though. Including exam raises, I'll be making 13% more than a year ago.

And why do you need sales to receive a bonus? If you are in sales you should only get a bonus if you surpass your sales target. Where I work everyone has a target, and depending on your year end review you either get above or below that target (on the whole the payout meets the overall target). Sometimes that's referred to as 'merit based' wages. Bonus pool is only funded if company meets profit targets. Why WOULDN'T you tie some of your compensation to overall corporate success?

Almost 18K this year. and some units end last year currently worth about 28k. Too bad it takes 5 years for 100% vest on the units..

nice bonus
what kind of work?

E-discovery/Litigation Support consulting. To be honest most of the rest of the company didn't get nearly that kind of dough. The boss for my group definitely tries to give back more than most. In a perfect world, I wouldn't mind having that as part of my base rather than bonus but I know I can't complain given other peoples' situations.

Agreed. Bonus should be based on meeting or exceeding "targets" or certain sets of expectations for your level. I work in consulting and if only sales people got bonuses on top of their already high base salaries, there would be FAR more disgruntled workers.

I've pulled ridiculous hours and busted my balls to meet client expectations and ensure that they're satisfied with our work. Just because I'm not a sales guy does NOT mean I shouldn't get a bonus. My work is as or more important than sales because if I screw up, the client will consider us incompetent and never work with us again. For sales people, even if they don't pick up a client now, there's always the opportunity to get work from them later.

I'm not downplaying a sales position, but it's ridiculous to say only people who directly sell business should get a bonus.

ha ha yeah I see a lot of companies doing that (ours included).
Boss: "Yeah the raise is low because you know, it's tough economic times and the company has to be careful and next year's revenue is expected to be flat."
Employee: "But we made more revenue last year than all the years our group has been active..."
Boss: "Yeah but we're foreseeing tough times ahead so..."
Employee: "But that what's you said last year and the year before and look what happened..."
Boss: "Yeah well, look, I don't control the raises. Corporate does. So we have no choice in the matter."

They always defer to "It's Corporate's decision" once all their prior arguments have run out. At least I got a decent bonus.

My wife (sales) got 20% this year, which was much higher than expected.

Engineers don't get bonuses. :(
