Nah. I just know Anubis has (relative to their alternative)expensive toys like camera gear, headphones and computer equipment that other people wouldn't care about.

It's just like you said, everyone has different priorities and what you like to spend money on someone else may care less about.

I drive a banged up Malibu that I'd be lucky to get $5,000 for. But my house is worth close to half a million.

*shrug*

I see your point in comparing utilitarian items to luxury, or fun items.

However, the difference between a $10 pair of earbuds and a $400 pair of Sennheiser headphones, or a $200 netbook vs. a $4k gaming PC is dramatically different than a $2k beater vs. a brand new $30k car.

As well, you can hear things on the more expensive headphones that you can't on the earbuds. You can run games and other programs on the expensive PC that you can't on the netbook.

A more expensive car though, while it may be more comfortable and faster, is artificially limited by traffic, traffic lights, speed limits, etc. It can't get you from A to B appreciably faster than a beater. Not really an equal comparison.

Same deal up here in Vancuver Canada. I'd say it's a little worse actually. About 800k for a house close to the city and rents are similarly high. 7-800 would be fairly low cost close to the city for nothing special. One reason, though a small one, that I still live with the parents. Love this city though!!

Ahem...I have to call you out on this. The real reason is probably more to do with an uncertainty for your direction and/or that your parents haven't "encouraged" you to move out.

If you're going to school, it can be a good idea to live at home and save money (although I know several people who are renting with roommates while studying). But when you're just working? Why?

You can't learn to swim while standing on the edge of the pool. Either you get pushed in the deep end or you say "fuck it", and jump in yourself.

I love my parents, but I was miserable when I went back home after university. I had to though, as I was broke. Once you've had that freedom of being on your own and setting your own direction, it's impossible to readjust to being under parental rules, no matter how well-intentioned they are.

Not to mention it makes it a lot harder to hang out with women 😉.

A lot of my friends, whether working or going to school, are living away from their parents. They're certainly not wealthy, but they make ends meet and they have a lot of fun.

I've been good about saving and investing since I moved out several years ago, but I've accepted that home ownership (and even apartment ownership) is unattainable for most young single people in this city. But I love it here, as you do, so I'm not planning to move any time soon.

So I may as well rent, have fun and set my own direction. I'll jump into the real estate market when I eventually get married (and thus have two incomes going towards a mortgage).

Just my friendly, motivational kick-in-the-ass for ya 😛. You sure as hell better not be in the same position 3 years from now 😉.

About 50k. No home, barely any equity. I used to make alot and spend alot, but wound that down considerably to support my company (instead of looking for investment, which I'm sure I wouldn't get). It's been a fucking tough path, either this thing rockets in 2011 or I'm restarting my life with about zero equity approaching 30 years of age.

It's not all bleak though, I'm pretty sure the company will do good enough to make me and my partner well off, and besides, I got a high enough earning ability (> 200k/year) if I somehow end up ditching this venture and going back to the market as a consultant.

But I won't.
2011 here we come.

He said "non-mortgage"! 😉

Now, it might be time to start up a "How much equity do you have?" thread? 😛
Yeah, that would be a far more interesting poll. I might not have any debt, but don't own many assets either. Many in debt have for more equity than me.

People would lie much more on that poll though, I'm sure.

No prob I need an occasional kick in the ass and motivational poke. Might be hard to believe but I DO want to move out myself as well.

150 or so on the house

10K on the wifes car, 6k on wife student loans

got most of all of that in the bank(the 16K)
