So it's cash back on purchase price, not account balance. My bad.
Ah, now I see where you were coming from. Some of the 5% cards are based on account balance. You pay in ~19% and they give you back 5%. Those cards are intended for suckers who can't read fine print and who can't understand the math on their credit card statement.
But Discover is up to 2% cash back on the purchase price, 5% cash back on certain purchases if you have a specific Discover card, and no cap on the amount you can get back in a year. To me, cash back is far better than a plane ticket that you may never need/want or a discount on a future vehicle that you may never buy, or whatever else the promotion is. Heck, if I want a plane ticket, I'll use my cash back to just buy the ticket and still come out ahead.
I've got ~$38 sitting on Discover now. Waiting for it to hit $40 to cash in.
