I'm 5.10 160lbs and can bench 195 5 times. I've only been benching for a couple of weeks though :D So i guess thats pretty good.

I used to do 60lbs at L.A. Fitness, but never tried higher because that was the highest the dumbells would go.

Two-handed (with curl bar), I used to slap a couple of 45's on each end and go to work. That again, was in my younger "prime".

When I weighed 195, I used to do 18-pound barbell curls 5 for 10-12 rep sets. With pretty good form, too. I often did dumbbell curls with 80s.

I don't have any list of records in front of me, but I'm trying to illustrate the point that as you get heavier, don't expect the increase in lifting power to scale linearly. This is because it's likely to see a 150 lb or 200 lb guy that is all shredded muscle without much bodyfat, but when you get to the heavier weight classes like 350 - 400 lbs, those guys are very strong but a carry large percentage of bodyfat on them.

Here's a guy that competed in the 198 lb class and lifted 514 lbs in competition and 565 lbs in practice. I don't know if anyone has beaten this or not since then.

right so not even the elite can do what you said what is normal...
gotcha..
but yes i know what you MEANT to say. someone who weight 130 has a much better chance of benching their weight compared to someone who weighs 200

Don't usually max out on anything, but I'm fairly certain I can do my own body weight.

5'7 175

i normally start out with incline bench (205-225) before I hit the regular bench press. I can put up 245 5-6 times.

For muscle mass and strength, is it better to do a lot of weight but few reps, a little weight with lots of reps, or somewhere in between?

If your going for mass lift heavy with about 6-8 reps per set. Lighter weights more reps (12-15) per set will get you more defined or "cut up" Normally uou would want to switch it up every once in awhile so you shock your muscles into more growth otherwise you will just get use to it after awhile and not notice any gains...

what is your problem.. I said i can bench 80lbs 15 times and curl 80lbs 5 times, i've never tried more like I explained in my previous post. I just started lifting and plan on doing so until i am physically unable to lift (ie hopefully never).

edit: btw i'm 5'7" and weigh 175

Bench pressing with the bar never really did much for me. It seems to only work my shoulders while my chest doesn't get pumped at all.

Weird thing is that when I quit doing the bar and started pressing dumbells, when I tried the bar a few months later I could easily do much more weight. The dumbells really hit the chest muscle good on me while the bar is primarily a shoulder exercise for me.

Also, when I started doing squats, that helped me in all aspects of lifting, not just legs. I heard people say that before but it never made any sense to me. But it's true.

91TTz - How wide was your grip when using the bar? Your grip may have been to wide on the bar if you are feeling it in your shoulders more that your chest. Cause really if you are benching with the bar theres no other exercise ( for me at least ) that will pump the chest out more. Dumbells are a good way to get more definition in the chest. As for the squats thats pretty much true for anyone as the body really doesnt want to get unproportioned.

I've tried all kinds of grips. I've tried shoulder width, wide grip, and even with my hands close together. Still doesn't seem to help me. After about 8 years of trying to increase my bench, I just cut my losses and gave up. I do dumbells exclusively now, and as a result my bench is higher (when I'm curious and see how much I want to do) than it ever was.

I guess everyone is just built differently.

btw, last time I tried I weighed 175 and did 275 for 1 rep max.

for the average male, BP'ing your bodyweight is good, but
not anything to brag about.

for lighter bodyweight men, the max ratio of BP to body weight tends to be higher,
although heavier men lift more in absolute terms.

BTW, i know a guy in Monterey, Ca. who weighs less than 220
who's done 771.5 in a drug-tested powerlifting contest.

i've seen a guy who weighed less than 150 lbs do over 450.

oh, in answer to the question, yes i can BP more than my bodyweight.

edit: spelling

I love doing a set of dumbell flies right after each set of incline/regular bench. That sh!t kills me the next day.

Same here. In 8 years of trying conventional bench I quickly hit a plateau and stayed there. In 6 months of doing dumbell flies my chest has increased in size more than it has in the previous 6 years.
