How much can you bench press?

I've heard it's pretty normal (good I guess) to be able to bench press your own body weight. I don't think I can; I'm kinda tall and skinny, which doesn't lend itself to upper body strength. I am working on it though.

For muscle mass and strength, is it better to do a lot of weight but few reps, a little weight with lots of reps, or somewhere in between?

Bench has never been my strong point. I got 275 up maybe 2x when i was about 260 lbs.

let's just say my legs are much stronger than my upper body because of years of skating. I'm going to start working on my upper body this year though... really need to.

i have no idea what I can do... I started lifting about 2 months ago... I can bench 80lbs 15 times, and I weigh 175lbs... I am slowly moving up because I want to be able to lift the same weight the same amount of reps no matter what muscle group (ie bench 80lbs and curl 80lbs).

for this poll, is this a max weight(1 rep), or is it the weight you can bench a good number of reps(7-10) for a good number of sets(3-4)
also, you have very limited choices in the poll

That's not a smart idea. Your body wasn't designed with that in mind-- you're going to hold yourself back in all areas while you work on your weak link.

Make sure you do your trigger-finger exercises. If you didn't start 'em yet, better drop that 80 down to 5 pounds or so until you work your way back up. ;)

In my "prime", I could bp about 380 ten times, but my max was 425. I got it up and down, but on my 2nd rep I tore my bicep and pec. :(

At the time, I weighed 235 lbs.

Now... umm... let's just say I can't do that anymore.

either you are talking about some weird 'curling machine' that is very inaccurate. If you can only bench 80lbs, but can curl 80lbs also(this MUST be using a curling bar and 2 hands), then you have some screwed up muscles

im talking a curling bar... i'm trying to up my curl i can bench 80lbs 15 times but can only curl 80lbs 5 - 6 times, i'm bringing that up to curling it 10 times, then add another 10 lbs (5lbs a side) to the bar... works out nicely

edit: i originally said freeweights, but I mean curling bar... (to me a bar is a freeweight as opposed to a machine) so maybe thats what you mean

I was trying to point out the silliness of your idea. You should work on things in the proper proportion. Otherwise, you'll have huge strong biceps, a weak chest and legs, etc. Get it? Your body isn't made to be as strong in a curling motion as in a bench press or a squat; if it is, something's seriously wrong.

This poll favors lighter people, since strength/weight ratios don't scale linearly.

It's easy for a flea, or a cricket, or a grasshopper, or a spider to jump many times its height. But you're not going to see an elephant doing that.

For people, it's athletic, but realistic for a 200 lb guy to be able to bench 600 lbs. But don't expect a 350 lb guy to be able to bench 1,050 lbs.
