My roomate is interested in getting a better computer. He will only use it for email, play music, internet. He currently has:
Dell Optiplex GX400
P4 1.4 GHz
128MB ram
GeForce 2 32mb

How much better would this setup be (keep in mind he wants to keep it cheap since he wont use it for very much, mainly wants a faster computer):
Sempron 64 2800
Epox 8KDA3J
Asus GeForce MX4000 (No gaming)
Antec SLK3000
Fortron AX400 400w PSU
512mb Corsair ValueSelect ram

All this is only $338 shipped at the egg
Any suggestions or ideas of how much better this would be would be appreciated. Thanks

don't buy a new graphics card, just drop the geforce 2 into the new box to save money.the new machine should be significantly faster... the old p4's (willamettes) were pretty damn slow. If you insist on spending the money, drop in a gig of ram.

thanks wanted to get the new card because he just bought a 17" Dell LCD and wants to go ahead and get DVI if he gets one, is that one good enough

He could add another 256 MB to his current rig and it would make a big difference for just email, music playback and the web.

Otherwise. like albumleaf says the gf2 is a perfectly good card that's not much slower than the mx in 3D and is just as fast in 2D.

512 MB is plenty of RAM for these uses, 1 GB is overkill.

How much better? Complex web pages will render faster, and switching tasks will be faster because of the extra RAM. If he changes his mind about gaming he can also always put in a good 3D card like a 6600GT and be set.

edit - for DVI it makes sense, though at 1280x1024 DVI isn't not really crucial VGA will work fine.

It will be a noticeably faster PC, but it's hard to say if that's worth $300+ to your friend.

It's also hard to guess how much faster it will be compared to just spending $30 on RAM for thw P4, without knowing if your friend is running into slowdowns from the CPU (instead of memory) from flash games or other internet use.

keep in mind its a P4 A. As such it will be RDram and that will NOT be cheap. He can spend upwards of $150 just on a stick of ram.

Just get that system but I would toss in a gig. of ram....512 I consider minimum for XP....
