How much better will geforce4 ti 4200 be then my gf2mx?

I bought morrowind last night and it runs pretty slow in some parts (mostly the towns and stuff) after a couple tweaks (safedisc and quadriatic lighting, and some D3D settings). That and the fact that the water looks pretty ugly right now on my gf2mx 32MB + Athlon 1400mhz system made me decide last night that I would finally upgrade my video card. I chose the geforce4 4200 for the price (still a lot but I really want morrowind to run fast), and that it's a great performer.

I just want to know how much better do you guys think the game will run on that card? What resolution, will I be able to run with AA on at all? I'm basically wnting you guys to make me feel better about spending 200 bucks on a new card, so tell me what impressed you about going to a geforce 3 or 4 after having a low end card like a gf2mx or a voodoo3 for so long.

If you want to spend closer to $100, then look into a GF3 Ti200 (great overclocker) or Radeon 8500, which can be found for <$100 now (check hot deals).

LOL. I guarantee you will have an orgasm when you see the difference in performance for the first time. But seriously, you will see a big difference in Morrowind. First, the pixel shader effects on the water will blow you away. It is almost photorealistic. Second, I have an Athlon 1.3 Thunderbird, 512 ram; basic 200 FSB motherboard with Nvidia 29.20 detonator drivers running a Leadtek Geforce 4 Ti-4400 overclocked to 300/650. I run the game at 1028 x 768, 32 bit color with 2x AA. The game runs silky smooth (20 to 30 fps).

I kid you not, you will notice a big difference in not only Morrowind but all of your games. Moreover, the features of the Geforce 4s (4600, 4400, 4200) give you peace of mind. You will never have to worry not being able to run a particular feature (i.e.-pixel shaders, vertex shaders, anistropy filtering, etc.) in a game or benchmark. Also, these cards overclock well, especially the 4400 and 4200. As far as particular cards, you can't go wrong with Gainward, Leadtek or Visiontek. I also like PNY. Have fun.

As Anand mentioned in his latest 4200 review, if the 4400 is only $30 more than the 4200, go with the former.

I can't go for the 440 unless it drops in price. I was planning on spending around 100$, then i saw gf3ti 200 for 130 and i said ok, might as well get that. THen i saw a gf4 for around 200 and i was like alright i might as well get something high end to last me a while. That's already braeking my bank so I can't go any higher. But thanks for the suggestion.

Remember, 440 isn't the same as 4400 - 440 is MX which most people detest (at least from what I've seen - I don't have one myself). I have a GF3ti200 which was a HUGE jump from my previous GF2mx400. Stay just behind bleeding edge and you won't regret it later financially ;) I bought the first Geforce 1 Prophet DDR-DVI 32mb when it came out - US$265 :p

Just my .02

Hahaha, sorry i meant 4400 not 440, i wasn't referring to the gf4mx. Although it does cost only about 70 dollars. How does that compare to the gf2mx? I wont get it tho cause i want the nice water and nice speed in morrowind.

oh in that case... the ti4400 will chew up the gf2mx... spit it out... squat down and take a dump on it... then back over it with a ford expedition. u get where this is heading right?

Excursion? I was hoping it would use a humvee or that giant bulldozer from the jackie chan movie where the wheels alone were like 20feet tall.

The difference between the two cards is so great that it's almost sacrilege to mention them in the same sentence. ;)

Seriously, the difference will be like getting punched in the face and getting knocked out. Go for it. :)

I would feel good about getting the GF4 Ti4200 card, it will last you for awhile and is a nice upgrade for the price. You won't be disappointed. Pairing it up with your Athlon 1.4 and you will be cruisin. You should be able to run just about any resolution you want with Morrowind and some AA as well.
