How much bandwidth would streaming DVD use?

Is it do-able on a 100 Mbps LAN? I think it would be awesome if you was some kind of box with A/V inputs and a regular LAN output. You would then load up a player on your computer and just type in the IP# to watch whatever was being sent to the box.

My DVD player usually varies between about 6-9 Mbps, so I guess the bandwidth is there on a 100Mbps LAN.

OK, 2nd edit because I was right first time 😱

Interesting, I didn't realize it was that low. With some hardware compression you could even do it over wireless..

yeah, I was quite surprised it was that low, but that's what the stats on the screen say on the player.
If you think about it a decent quality DivX is < 1Mbps, so it seems about right.

I read somewhere that streaming full screen video (like mpeg-2 DVD) requires something like 15Mbps. I can't recall exactly where I read this but the context was of the necessary improvements required for internet infrastructure and bandwidth to go big time, i.e. replace cable TV.
