How much bandwidth should I feel safe using on campus?

Ahhh most of the problem is our network controllers are retarded, (example 1-they told my sister that to fix her internet, which wasnt connecting to the network, to turn off ALL security measures in windows including anti-virus and anti spyware apps  )

But anyways even tho they have a wireless 802.11G network, they'll tell students to buy this el cheapo wireless connector that is only 802.11B and can hardly keep a signal, whereas I went and bought myself a good Netgear connector and hence my uber downloading speeds :) And unlimited network bandwidth :)

Actually, Napster has a deal with my school (maybe many or all schools, don't really know), where any student can get full Napster service with access to a million tracks blah blah blah for only $20 for the whole school year. Not a bad deal at all, but music wouldn't be the majority of my downloading anyway.

Basically, I'm trying to decide what I should download at school and what I should download at home through RDC and put on my HDD when I come home.

Traditionally, you do not get into trouble for downloading files.

Distributing files is when the RIAA and MPAA gets on your arse.

Can you explain how that works? I know nothing about it but it sounds like something I might want to do when I go to college next year.

I would just use Remote Desktop Connection which is built into XP Pro to connect to and control my home computer from school. I could then initiate and monitor my downloads, and when I come home for break or a weekend or whatever, put them on my external hard drive.

The thing is, I'm taking my desktop with me to school, so the only computer at home will be my dad's, which only has a 10 GB hard drive in it, which about half is currently used. I would sap that up quickly if I started downloading on it, and plus the next time I could come home could be a month away.

I could avoid uploading almost completely with the exception of minor FPS multiplayer and very highly capped uploads in eMule and Shareaza. The question is, will they be monitoring my downloads (as in, seeing exactly what I'm getting), and will they cap my download bandwidth? The searched their website for bandwidth using Google and the site: parameter but it pulled up nothing related.

You at VT?

Because that's exactly the policy I remember when I lived in the dorms.

Since this will obviously be your first year there, wait until you get there and ask another student... one who has a lot of movies or whatever you're downloading on his computer.

If their IT department doesn't suck at their jobs, you probably won't be able to use most of the filesharing programs you typically use anyway.

Just stay away from those P2P apps like blubster and you'll be fine. Too many of those apps totally waste bandwidth because of the needless connections they make. I can almost guarantee that they have some kind of packet shaper that's gonna screw your connection before you get too far. If not, give them a reason to install one.

Last fall, I got my account suspended for wasting too much bandwidth so I believe the bandwidth was around 100gb. :Q

LOL. Um, if you're going to the Grove City I'm thinking of (Western PA?) you'll be in the majority of people doing that. I don't think they even let girls and guys hold hands on campus.

It is the Grove City you're thinking about. I'm not worried. With my girlfriend less than an hour away and her own car I should have no problem getting off campus to do what we want to do.

I suppose I'll ask around when I get there. I have a feeling that not too many people there are into that, however. But what kind of hardware protection do they have on those networks? Will ports be blocked to make programs like eMule or BT 100% unusable?

For those of you that using anything like BT on your campuses, were the typical BT ports already open on their network? I imagine they wouldn't be.

If you have a respectable IT department, the packetshaper will make sure that BT is not usable. Most P2P programs will also either blocked or slowed by the IT dept.

Your best bet is finding out if there is a DC++ Hub setup (IT dept normally doesn't care because it's all internal bandwidth) or IRC.
