How much back up power would you need to run a low power PC for 8 Hrs?

Is it possible? When I gear my vehicle up for severe storm research, I would like to give the PC recording the data as much time as possible if I can't have the engine on for whatever reason. I was looking at Back UPS at newegg and they had a Belkin there for $134 that would run a PC for 100 minutes. Since I am truly looking into use one of those low power mini-ITX Via Eden systems (They have a 1.2Ghz version now!) I am betting that I could get more time out of it. Do you know if I could daisy chain them? Thanks for any help.

you could try a laptop. That way you can run off the battery.

I have no idea about daisy chaining APC's, but maybe you could get a DC adapter and run it off your main car battery?

Yeah, look at getting either a laptop that you can plug into the vehicle's cigarrete-lighter jack, or an inverter that converts your car's DC into AC for your computer. A gasoline-powered computer (indirectly) 😀

The problem with a laptop is that they are prohibitively expensive and I could build a considerably more powerful desktop for the same if not less money. Hmm, I'll have to research this a little more.

Fuel cells work well in space. 🙂

What you need to determine with accuracy is the actual power demand in watts.

Purchase a UPS with no less than 250% of this rating in VA and expand its battery capacity accordingly.

You could also use an inverter directly off the vehicle's electrical system.

A pair of 100 Ah Pb pilas designed for trolling should give you 600 minutes reserve with a medium power setup, more if you conserve. Don't expect it to run the coffee pot though!

Cheers!

Use a (high capacity) UPS for each separate component . . .

one for the computer, one for the lcd (you're NOT using a CRT?!), one for the accessories. . . .

a notebook would be ideal . . . you can get a used or refurbished for pretty cheap (check FS/Trade or hot deals often).

A centrino will give you more power than the via eden systems. The via eden systems are VERY underpowered, so they may not work well for what you are doing.

Personally, I want a bunch of them for myself though. 😉
