Well, I used to say $150, but then I bought a Treo 680, and now I'm not so sure...

I've been thinking about how much I shoud spend a lot lately. I think I am willing to spend up to 300...and I don't even have a lot of money to throw around. Its just out of all the things I buy and all the things I use, the phone is one of those things I will use everyday in and out. A xbox or a ps3 or a whatever else will not.

But then again you can usually sell the cell phones if they are any good for usually a good amount, making back some of the money.

Since I refuse to sign my life over to the phone companies I pay full prices for my (and my wive's) phones. To date, the most expensive phone I purchased was Cingular 8525 for $425.00 without contract. I may just convince myself to spend about $100.00 more and get this bad boy.

I'd like a free phone if I'm forced into a contract and charged for stuff I don't use or never use it. I use about 2000 minutes a month (mostly at night) and don't really use the phone for anything else. I don't like the idea that service providers have been increasing the minutes and options AND price, but removed the cheaper plans for people who don't need lots of unused minutes. My old plan which was $32/month offered all I needed + unlimited nights/weekends, but my phone was dying. So now I pay $43/month for 'more' minutes. This was the lowest plan that I could get and provided what I needed. I did at least get a free razr and $150 rebate. I justify the higher monthly cost because I got the free phone and rebate.

I'd be willing to pay $300 or more for a new phone if it wasn't attached to a contract and provider. Also if the provider didn't try to screw me by tacking on additional features that I don't need.

Nobody is trying to "screw" you. Carriers are adding features and plans that the vast majority want. If they don't have a plan to suit you, go with another carrier. If none of the carriers have a plan to suit you, go prepaid.

I'd go to $500 for a good smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard. Most I've paid yet is $30.
