How much are average house prices where you live?

I'm talking a detached house + land it sits on. Nothing fancy just your average looking detached house. Around here you are still looking at an average of about $800,000 or more. And I live about 15 mins from the city centre. We live in a townhouse, not detached, so hour house doesn't count here (it's in the 700k range still though). One advantage of living with your parents :) Of course if you move farther afield or go to different neighbourhoods prices will fluctuate but you would be hard pressed to find a detached home for less than 700k anywhere within about 30mins of the city.

Uhmm, my friend just bought a 3BR for $900k or so. Not even that good of a house. I know my fam's house is something around 1.7-1.8 million. CA FTW!

Average price here is between 85K-125K

Average price being a home with 3BR and roughly 1500-2500 sq. ft. Those are the average homes around where I live.

The tax credit has homes around here about $10,000 overpriced. I would say around $150,000.

Hmm .... town I live in ... Townhouse or Condos just 1 bedroom are around 150K. Small, old, houses in need of a LOT of attention are maybe 150-170K. You can find a 30ish year old 1000 sq foot house starting around 175K up to around 250K .... Most of the 2500-3000 sq foot houses built in the last 5 years are going for around 300K-350K. Waterfront homes on Bangs lake go for 50-100K more. Houses bordering the Lakewood Forest Preserve to the south of town are generally on acre+ lots and newer 3500+ sq foot, they are 750K+ (biggest one that I've seen for sale was around 1.8 million.)

The average price for single family homes sold in Greater Victoria last month was $590,567, down from $619,936 in September. The median price was $536,000. The six-month average was $587,623. The overall average price for condominiums was $322,349 last month, down slightly from $325,106 in September. The average for the last six months was $316,137. The median price for condominiums in October was $297,000. The average price of all townhomes sold last month was $438,058 down from $441,966 in September. The median price dropped slightly to $409,500. The six month average was $431,675.

I tend to follow the median rather than the average as the average can be thrown completely out of wack by one sale (Russ Courtnall's previous home sold for $6m earlier this year).

In my town, $134,000 is the average price right now. It was about 30,000 more than that 18 months ago.

For the state of Connecticut as a whole, $260,000 is the average price. For Greenwich? About 1.1 million!

Guess I shouldn't complain... the average price of a house in Las Vegas went from $280,000 to $130,000 in three years!

Huge range depending on where you live, and what your priorities are.

Right now I'm renting a little bungalo home about 2 blocks from ghettoville. It's a 2BR house in need of some TLC, with no yard to speak of and no garage. But it's a $55,000 I'm renting for under $600 a month and it's got solid bones and is cozy.

I'm in the process of building a $350k home on 1.5 acre's that will be over 4 BR, 3200 finished sq/ft with a full unfinished basement, dedicated home theatre, and 4 stall garage. That home is about 15 minutes outside of town in a quiet rural subdivision of similar priced homes.

And then there's a whole lot in between the two price ranges.

Well under 100k

I still can't figure out how new houses managed to sell for so much in some areas - housing prices skyrocketed while the cost of materials remained relatively flat. Thus your $300k home on 1 acre in 2000 became a $600k home in 2008. Did the price of land go up by $300k per acre?
