Thought this might be fun for the younger generation to see how much computer technology, and especially pricing, has changed over the last few years.
First so-called p.c.=Adam cassette tape drive that also played cartridge games..Ate tapes like crazy, don't remember the price.
First x86 p.c.= TANDY 286 4/8 mhz,(dual speed)desktop; .42 pitch color monitor; 1-3 1/2 floppy. No hard drive,basic sound,and video. .$1300 .. I added another floppy, a 40 MB HDD ,and a dot matrix printer for a grand total of $2,000.......lol

The younger generation? Heh, I'm 14 and my first computer was (yes, i got it for christmas, i didn't pay for it):
Pentium 100, 8mb RAM, 1gb HD, $3,500 😀 Believe it or not I still use this. Makes a pretty good linux box though.

386 sx 33 with 4 megs of ram (4, 1-meg SIMMs), 80 meg HD, 2400 baud modem, 14 inch color monitor. No sound card, i forget what kind of video card.

scorched earth and star control 2 rock!

It cost me around 300 when i bought it

My first computer was a Commodore 64. My first IBM compatible machine was a 286 8Mhz. I can't remember how much ram it had, but it wasn't much. It had a 40 meg hard drive

I had an 8086 ( not an 8088 ) and a heathkit. anyone else here haev a Heathkit? 🙂

I also still have 2 ozborne's complete with reciepts 🙂 Only $2200 bucks for the first portable computer. One of them still works 🙂

My first computer was a Commodore 64... It was a portable version, with a screen the size of a post card. It was heavy as hell, but I loved it. I wrote a banner program for it that would print out sideways banners (approximately 4" letters) on a dot matrix printer.

My first IBM PC was literally an IBM - An Aptiva 2168-M55. Pentium 100, 16 MB RAM, 1.6 GB HD, & one meg onboard video.

Viper GTS

I started with a 386sx, upgraded it several times, still remember the $500 phillips multimedia kit-lol, a sound card and a double speed cd-rom. I went from that to a P100 with a 1.7 gig hd and 32mb and a 17 inch NEC monitor, lol, I think the system itself was $2,500 and the monitor close to $850-$900.

We sure do get more for our money these days 🙂

ha-- I had that same computer almost... an old tandy, but mine didnt have a color monitor, it was one of those crappy green and black displays. It sucked, didnt use it for anything but some dumb games and word processing.

my next computer was a macintosh performa 33mhz, 512mb hard drive, and 8mb or ram. i still have that computer today and it still runs.

386SX 16MHz, 3MB RAM (upgraded later to 5MB -- 1 meg soldered to the motherboard!), 14" VGA color monitor, a Z-Nix mouse, DOS 5 and Windows 3, 100MB HD (I always had to install one game at a time! Those 12-disk 25MB monsters). Upgraded with a cheap 2X CD-ROM and 16-bit sound card multimedia kit - lol baffled, mine was cheap we couldn't afford the name brand. Still around $250 though. But the BEST was when I saved up my money and installed a blazing 14.4Kbps modem! Quite an upgrade over the 2400baud that came with the computer. Man, the ANSI graphics would fly playing Trade Wars 2002 on that baby! Epson dot matrix printer.

BTW I'm from the "younger generation"... this was my family's first computer, we got it when I was 9 or 10.

8088XT with 512k RAM, DUAL 5.25" Floppies (low density), CGA 4 color video, and no HDD.Cost? About $3,000CDN then.

First computer was a Atari 600XL with Indus floppy drive and the 32k RAM upgrade!

My first computer was an IBM PCjr when I was 13, I think it was $399 or $499. Also had an IBM Proprinter dot matrix printer, and later on got a 384KB upgrade on the memory to bring it up to 512KB. The memory add-on bolted to the side of the PCjr.

Loved the wireless keyboard and playing Ultima III while laying on my bed. Also remember playing Leisure Suit Larry, Kings Quest, Police Quest and many other Sierra games back when they were the kings of computer gaming.

Commodore VIC20 I think it had 64K ROM, cassette tape drive, hooked up to the TV.

Dunno how much it cost, t'was a gift.

Excluding the Sinclair and the Commodores....

My first "PC"

IBM XT
8088 CPU @ 4.77 MHz
512k RAM (150ns!)
DUAL 5.25" Double Sided, Double Density (360k!) Floppies
10 Meg BELT ACTUATED MFM Hard Drive (135ms Access time!)
12" Amber Monitor
MGA (Monochrome Graphics Adapter) w/Printer Port!

$3,500!

I later upgraded the CPU to an NEC V-20 chip and desoldered the crystal from the motherboard and picked up a faster one at Radio Shack. Once it was soldered back in place.... 7MHz!!!! Back in those days, many games were timed via the clock rather than in software... so with the extra efficiency of the NEC chip and the higher clock rate, most of my games became so fast that you would die before you could move. We're talking about PacMan'esque type games... my favorite of which was a game called "Digger"

Had an apple 2GS back in the day, I think my dad said it cost around $2500 at the time, I have no idea what the specks were though....Ahh yes, the memories of playing mars patrol, lode runner, bolo, galaxia...all off 5 1/4 floppies....

1983 Tape drive, I thought it was called Colecovision (been too long) but a search only shows game systems.

HAHAHA..That was the one that I had.I couldn't remember the full name.It was an Colecovision Adam.It had a slot toward the rear for inserting game cartriges, also used a connection to a regular t.v.........

My first one had a Cyrix 200(really a 150) 32 megs of ram, 850 MB HDD, 8x CD-Rom, 2 MB video card, 33.6 modem and a crappy 14 inch monitor. It cost me $600.

The first computer that actually belonged to me was a Packard Bell. $1499 for Pentium 75, 8 megs of RAM, 540 MB hard drive, 2x CD-ROM, floppy, 14.4 modem, Sound Blaster 16, Cirrus Logic video with 512K RAM, and a 14" monitor.

The first computer that my family owned was a Macintosh Classic. We got it 10 years ago and my dad still uses it as his primary computer.

First real one was a Macintosh LC II. It was speedy 16mhz with 4 MB RAM and a 40 MB SCSI hard drive. No cdrom. It came with a 13" monitor. I upgraded it to 8mb (an additional 4mb 30pin SIMM) a few months later for only $400. What a steal!

All for a affordable $2800! What a deal!

I think it was about 20 Mhz with 2 or 4 mb of ram. Not sure on the other specs, its been too long 😛 It was $2500.

My first PC was an IBM PS/1 with a speedy 10MHz Intel 80286 processor, 1 MB of RAM, and a whopping 30MB hard disk! It was free since it was given to me for my birthday (my 9th birthday, iirc).

Adam, that was it. Thanks.

The Coleco Adam was designed by Coleco (makers of the Cabbage Patch Kid doll) to be an expansion on the COLECOVISION game system. It was designed in the early eighties (1981-1983) and manufactured for only 2 years. It uses a Z80 CPU with 64k of RAM, comes with 32k ROM with a built in wordprocessor, 3 internal slots, a cartridge slot, a bus expansion, and the "AdamNET" high speed LAN for connecting the keyboard, daisy wheel printer, and disk drives.
