How much am I going to regret buying this bicycle?

check it yourself.. for that price you wont regret it.

I bought a 60$ target special in 2002 i think or was it 2001. It still runs good. Though the chain came off last week. Well in its defense when it rained it would sit at teh school parking lot until i came to pick it up a few days later. So the chain coming off is acceptale for a that age. Plus i ride it hard and quite a bit.

I am getting a new chain tomorrow or getting teh old one lubed and a tune up and it should be good to go.

The bike is a 26" Magna Glacier Point mens MTB.. no suspension nothing.. just a normal bike with 12 speeeds.

Should be fine as long as you're not planning to ride it.

Nah 😀, seems just fine for a trip to the mall. Nobody would steal it cause it's not worth the effort, it's a good thing.

What are LBs?

If I could find one, my preference is a 10-speed (curled handlebars) that were popular back in the 80's and 90's. But I can't find one near me.

Here's a bike from Target that seems to get some decent reviews:
Target Schwinn

LBS = Local Bike Shop

Look in the yellow pages under "bicycles" instead of "giant warehouse discount retailer" if you want to find one instead of walmart or target.

Also, there are probably plenty of 10 speeds from the 70s and 80s on your local craigslist that are cheaper than that $99 bike, and they're much better bikes. Buy one of those and take it in to your LBS and get it tuned up, and it'll last another 20 years.

I dont quite understand. I have a bike from walmart still going strong after 6 years. It a purely street bike just for riding around the neighborhood. The only reason I'm getting a new one is because I popped the break assembly (foot braked) after slamming on the breaks while going down hill at around 55 😛
55? How steep was the hill?

i doubt he was doing 55...it just feels faster on a bike, you know?

I've bought my son's last 2 bikes from WalMart Clearance racks. The 16" cost me $25...it lasted 2 years, his 20" cost me $30, it's going on it's 3rd summer....although he'll probably get a new one for his birthday this year.

This year I found a bike similar to this one : a neighborhood cruiser on clearance for $30... but since it was scratched I got them to give it to me for $20. 🙂

Haven't ridden it yet....but will be trying it out soon... for $20 I almost had to get it... lol 🙂

Dude, don't do it. I bought one pretty much exactly like it when at uni. They weigh a tonne, all the cables stretch in mere days, gears are horrible, there are no bearings, just bushings. If you're going to only spen $100 on a bike, at least get one without suspension so there's a chance a little more money has been spent on basic components.

Seriously, don't buy it.

If you're just going to ride around your neighborhood or commute to school or something, it'll do just fine. Just let a local bike shop check out the assembly.

Yeah, no problems for that. If you are doing it for performance and real mountain/hiking biking, or even cyclocross, you may want to invest in something more.

Regular road riding is okay though ( < 30 miles ). Unless you are doing a real road ride in which heavy bikes become quite cumbersome over a 100+ mile ride.

I'm sure local bike shops love "checking the assembly" on
a Wal Mart bike ...

I've had my fair share of snobby LBSs... seems like I go to the back of the line because my bike doesn't have an italian name and you can pronounce it in your first try but there are shops that really couldn't give a ****** about what they work on even if you didn't buy it from them... as long as they've got someone riding a bike at the end of the day.

I suggest buying a tool kit for less than $30 and a bike maintenance book for less than $20, and do most of your bike maintenance yourself. 🙂

If you want to be able to do an overhaul on your bike (I doubt it on a cheaper biek like taht), you need to invest in a good expensive tool kit (Park Tools $100+). Otherwise.

A cheap tool kit, chain lube, and bike grease and you are set for regular maintenance.

I have worked on quite a few of them and if they need parts that cost over $30-$40 dollars (and many of them do after a few months, due to poor assembly) they are totaled!

By that I mean that for a few dollars more you can just go buy another one and usually that IS the better choice.

For that price, you are almost ALWAYS better off biding your time and picking up a used bike for the same amount of money. 99.9% of the time, if you wait and do your research and beat the bushes (Bulletin boards at bike shops, hitting garage sales and going through the want ads in the paper) you will end up with a bike that is at least 80% better.

The reason shops hate working on these kinds of bikes is it takes on an average at least TWICE as long to tune up a cheap bike as it does to do a half way decent one.

QFT. The lugs and nuts are usually cheaper and tend to get stripped, and the places that all of the bolts are screwed in are not always standardized like in other bikes.

Sorry, let it do it one more time then I'll stop.

OK. Now that I got that out of my system. Let me say this: You're only going to regret it as much as you expect out of it. It's a wal-mart bike, and it was cheap, so have low expectations.

Look on the bright side, if it breaks quickly, you're out what, $99?

55 is not really all that much on a steep hill. I wouldn't go any faster unless you are really well trained though. I try to limit myself to 45-50 on a downhill otherwise I feel a little shaky. But since I live in Houston, I don't worry about hills too much.

thecoolnessrune, did you have a cyclometer on you, or is that just a guess?

$99 that could have gone towards a decent bike.

I wouldn't go that fast on a Walmart bike. Fastest I've hit is 48 mph on one of my road bikes.

The cyclocomputer on my road bike cost more than that wallyworld bike.

Don't do it! They ride nice at first but then it's all downhill from there. Spend a few hundred extra and get a decent bike at a local shop.

Jules caught my point. At any rate, I've hit about 35 on my MTB on a fairly flat road.

Terminal downhill velocity on my BEAT to hell Giant Yukon is 36mph. Some incredible amount of my pedaling force just goes into grinding up more of the bike's crank case.... I need a bike soooo bad now, but I almost never bike anymore...

Same here. Flight Deck, just the sensors alone are about $60-70. 😉

Spend $200 on a real bike from a bike shop, you will be much happier. Walmart bikes fall apart.

Don't buy your bikes and your q-tips in the same store.

$200? At an LBS?

The lowest thing the two LBS had for MTB was $500.

I want something I can pedal super f'n hard twice a week for about 5 minutes each time on a street.

I will never go off-road and I'll never ride more than 3 miiles twice a week.
