How MMORPG's save money

Cost of WoW subscription:

$40 for game and $15 a month for subscription

things i have stopped doing since i have started MMOs

1. Stopped watching TV (easily save $50 a month or more)
2. Stopped going to party with friends (about $50 a week)
3. Stopped dating (never had that many expenses here)
4. Stopped buying other games (save $30 here and there)
Because Blizzard updates and adds new content every so often
5. Stopped eating as much because i no longer feel hunger like i used to (like $20 a day)
6. Stopped sleeping as much (save about 4 hours a day)
7. Stopped going to the movies every week (about $20 a week)

given broadband would be had either way, i say MMOs save a good bit of money.

I've noticed the same thing. However, if you ever stop playing the MMORPG (as I did with FFXI last year) then you usually end up going nuts rending/going to tons and tons of movies, buying games, etc.

I would never equate TV with experiencing life. Unfortunately I think I am in the minority in this country.

i wouldn't call watching tv experiencing life. i meant hanging out with friends. hanging out with family. reading a book. going for hikes. travelling. real stuff.

i also think interacting with people irl is completely different from interacting with people in an mmorpg.

before about 3 meals a day (1 big meal and 2 diet food bars) , now down to one (for example a 12oz steak or a big montana with fries or something)

I knew a guy I went to school with who tried to justify it to me the same way. Now he doesn't have a girlfriend or a job anymore (or at least he lost one of his jobs because of it).

Yeah, but you went a little overboard with it.

I played Planetside for a while (an MMO...FPS), and found:

1. Stopped watching TV ($40 a month - cable ISP costs more without cable TV)
2. Reduced buying other games noticeably (probably $30 a month)
3. Reduced going to movies (probably $30 a month - one movie with the wife and myself)

So, $12.99 (Planetside's monthly fee) to save $100 a month. Not bad.

On the OTHER hand....I've quite Planetside a few months back and just play other 'free to play' games - "America's Army" and "Rome: Total War", for example.

STILL haven't resubbed TV (not anything but crap on, anyway), don't really buy any more games, and we don't catch many movies (ditto - nothing but crap on).

I spend more time reading, in fact.

So, saying MMORPG monthly fees are the cure to save all that much isn't really true. The cure to not spending all that much is just finding better things to do that don't cost so much!
