I was actually researching mattresses too, I found this article from Slate. It looks like mattress makers don't supply the same mattress names to different stores (Sleepys vs Macys vs Whoever) so you can't pricematch as its not the Simmons Beautyrest World Class Granite Plush at every store. Just like the SKU is different between Best Buy & Walmart or something.

Here are some good quotes:

Here's the lowdown: Mattress makers rename identical products for each different retail store. Different labels, exact same guts. Why? Obfuscation. It's hard to shop for the lowest price when you can't compare apples to apples. Lucky for you, they're all subtle variations on the same apple—not only within each brand, but even among different brands.

The heart of an innerspring mattress is the coils. Otherwise it's just foam, cotton, quilting, and stitches. But the big-name mattress makers (with some exceptions) all get their coils from a single company, Leggett and Platt, for their highest-end mattresses down to their lowest. This is akin to every single car on the market, Lamborghinis to Kias, using an engine made by Ford. Except that mattresses are far less complicated than cars. In fact, they're so simple that there's no real difference among them at all.

And

If you can't tell the difference between a $200 and a $900 mattress (I couldn't, but maybe you can), get the cheaper one. They're nearly the same, anyway. Anything over $1,500 and you're just paying for prestige, says Larry Thomas. There are tons of great mattress sets for low prices. Yes, to an extent, you get what you pay for (better coil design, denser foam, ritzier ticking), but don't go crazy over this stuff. Lie down on mattesses in the store and trust your own judgment. Remember: Once you're asleep, every mattress feels the same.

Do you use a box spring with a memory foam mattress?

In that the sharks swim at the door waiting for the next upsell victim. I went out a few years ago and just looked. The high pressure at "mattress giant", "furniture city", "el dorado", "city furniture" and the 3 local "mattress shops" I went into was unreal. Everyone dogging on everyone else, talking about coil count, longevity, lets get you financed "whats it gonna take to get you into this today", and what not. It really was just like walking onto a used car lot.

Since I'm no expert and the folks selling them are sharks, and as marges boss once put it, "the right house is the one you are in, and the right person is anybody" - I'm a bit cautious of going out unarmed.

So after some googling, there is some truth to coil count vs. construction, a pillow-top is a horrible thing to have sewn on, and watch out for warranties. That being said:

Ikea has a few bed frames that are interesting, unfortunately there are 5 pages of folks on ikeafan.com with one of them which broke right in the middle the same way. Sort of disheartening.

The bed slat idea is not one I'm fond of, being of ample girth.

I don't see an advantage in shopping at Costco, perhaps because there might not be any sales sharks? The stuff is expensive as hell there. King beds start at 750.

I figured $600ish for a mattress, and somewhere around 400 for a frame. I'm seeing that to be possible, with some work.

It's nearly impossible to compare mattress models...there's about zero continuity between different sellers, even of "the same mattress."

If you think $750 is too expensive for a mattress...dude, WTF do you sleep on, a cardboard box?

Yes, you MIGHT be able to get a foam mattress cheaper than that, but IIRC, you're handicapped/busted up, and a cheap POS mattress may not help you a bit.

Sometimes in buying mattresses, you DO get what you pay for...BUT NOT ALWAYS!

IMO, the Costco mattresses are well built, and quality built, but sadly, the ones I've "tested" were all too soft for me and my FUBAR'd back. I NEED a mattress with firm support.

Unfortunately, there's just no substitute for going out and physically "test driving" a mattress. Climb on it, lay on it, sit on it, roll around on the dammed thing, they USUALLY draw the line as doing the horizontal bop in the showroom, but otherwise, it's expected that you will "try it on" before you buy it.

Find a reputable store to buy from. MOST of the better places will offer at least a 30 day trial period with no-hassle returns if it's just not right for you.

Around here, we have a chain called "Sleep Train." Fairly reputable, good return policy, and they sell mattresses of just about all types, models, and levels of quality.

For the $600 you want to spend on a mattress, you're probably going to be limited to a queen size if you buy any sort of quality.

$400 for a frame? Do you mean headboard/footboard type, or just a metal frame underneath? (those are usually less than $100 and many places will include a "hollywood frame" with the mattress). IIRC, we paid about $1500 for our headboard/footboard 11 years ago...on sale.

what density was the memory foam?

for future ref: get 4 or 5lb memory foam

what happened to the 20+ page memory foam thread?!
they had a reputable ebay dealer listed in there that many ATOT'ers bought from

Too dense... lol. It takes a couple of hours of body warmth for it to get really soft.

If you think $750 is too expensive for a mattress...dude, WTF do you sleep on, a cardboard box?

Quite the contrary. I was referring to the "beds" at costco starting at 750, which I thought was too expensive, being that its a frame, headboard and footboard , and that the mattress I was looking for was around $600.

My budget is about a thousand, give or take a few hundred. Like I said I figured $400 for a frame (aka "Bed") and $600 for the mattress (aka "what you sleep on").

If it were up to me I'd sleep like a Klingon on a cold hard non-porous surface, but the wife is not down with that. Current bed is a handmedown from the family, a guest bed... The cheap plain metal frame busted a while ago, and since we aren't college students anymore I thought it might be time to get a real bed. I just didn't know I would be putting out a years worth of car payments to do it.

I'm finding you all are right, $600 seems to be about where the somewhat decent king-size mattresses that might last a few years are ***starting***

you're handicapped/busted up

Nah thats the real bob dole. You might remember my drunk driving thread, but I'm just fine these days with no lasting effects.

I have a Sealy king mattress bought at Costco about 3 years ago.

At this point it's like sleeping in a trench during WWI.

/edit: turns out the memory foam topper has been like a trench, while the mattress underneath is still awesome.

We bought a Stearns and Foster set from Sears 6 years ago this month that was on a huge "sale." Still as comfortable as the day it was delivered. Haven't regretted our purchase at all.

I got a really good deal on my mattress at Big Lots. Already had the bed frame though. Try to hit up estate sales for frames you might be able to get an awesome antique one for dirt cheap.

I looked at mattresses in a local furniture store and bought a Serta Perfect Sleeper set with pad, cover and that tiny crappy scaffolding for $900 which was a better deal than online prices.

No sales pressure...and they had the beds set up in order from least expensive to most expensive.

Best money I've ever spent. Go to bed, out like a light within minutes and wake up perfectly refreshed.

Whatever you do... make sure you get a California King.

Even tho it's a little more expensive, the room is a must. Women are bed hogs.

and PillowTop.... omg sleep never felt better than on a PillowTop.

thinking about getting rid of my current mattress to get something a little more firm... I have a king size with 4" cool memory foam and it's just feels way too soft for my lower back...

Has anyone sold their mattress? Do any of these stores buy used mattresses?

Also, why are box springs needed?

I recommend a basic coil mattress with a 2-4" high density memory foam topper. Your mattress will feel just as good, if not better, and it won't die when the top goes.

I found a $1,000 matress set at an up scale department store at a huge discount, nearly half price because it was last years model and they just needed to move it out. this was a couple of years ago and just around late feb or early march after i got my tax refund.

As the title suggests, it is time to purchase a bed. My future wife and I have been sleeping upon a full size nightmare handmedown.

So. Since mattress-folk tend to be just as bad - if not worse than used car salesman - how might I go about doing this? I have about a thousand and I'd like to keep as much as I can.

Any tips? What to look for? I know that brands and models are essentially meaningless from store to store. I know to shy away from "discount" places, and I know pillow-tops that are sewn on are usually to be avoided.

Anything else?

So let me get this straight.....
getting screwed or laid comes with purchasing a mattress??
Then you want nothing of that if it`s a freebee tossed in.......

if it helps, costco king and cal king sized mattress has a 120 sale running from feb 4-28th. saw it in the coupon booklet they just sent out.

my thoughts are why bother with the fancy frame, just get the metal frame. use craigslist to find a nice headboard to attach later for 100-200 bucks

edit- double checked. its actually 160 off king/cal king size sealy barryton. no coupon needed, price is automatically reduced in store

I got a queen-sized memory foam bed from Walmart a few years ago for <$300. It's been great so far. Make sure to get a good pillow to go with it - I'm looking for a new pillow, since some nights I get neck pain.

IIRC, Simmons makes the mattresses for Starwood, (Sheraton, Westin, and W) but they're not just "rebadged Simmons," they're made to the specifications of the company.

I LIKE the Westin Heavenly Bed. VERY comfortable...Spendy when they're not on sale/with coupon, but they're VERY nice mattresses. When our Cal-King is ready for replacement, I think that's what we'll get.
