As in, when will politicians begin to worry about this issue?

Politicians worry? :D

Lol, ok, when will they make a big deal out of it?

I was much younger, but IIRC, Y2k wasn't made an issue by them for quite some time

They'll pay attention when prices are too high to fix anything probably
Read http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ for an interesting read. I'm sure its not entirely accurate but its one perspective to think about. I'm sure most people here have read it already as it circulated a lot a while back

Chevron/Texaco/BP estimate it to be 30-35 years. USGS (United States Geographical Survey or something) estimates it at 30 years. however these estimates don't fully account for the rapid growth China and India. so realistically, 20-30 years.

china right now grabs 1/2 of every new barrel of oil

there are lots of untapped sources, the greenies and the tree huggers just won't let us get to it, yet

my opinion is twice the current estimate (~35 years)... there are a LOT of new prospects and also current reservoirs that arent fully extracted... as in its been tapped before, but new methods and reexamination allows for even more yield ...and also all the companies ive seen have had phenomenal reserve replacement rates... at least thats what i gather from all the recruiters. im a senior in geo

Man, I am reading that book "Life after the oil crash" right now. Really depressing, but I think this guy is looking at the absolute worse case scenario.

yup. if we could tap all the resources, we wouldnt be out of oil for much more than the 3 decades or so they are estimating. canada has one hell of a supply underneath them. alaska, and a lot of other places in the us.

Yep, once the soccer moms start screaming for the black goo to power their 400hp, 6000lb. baby shuttles the enviromentalists will lose.

I wonder what the atmosphere is going to be like after we are done burning all the oil?

The issue isn't running out of oil, it is running out of cheap oil.

And we really don't know. It could be 10 years, it could be 100. It totally depends on how our technology advances and whether we find any new vast oil reserves or not.

Most of those figures are old and don't account for Russia's vast oil deposits in the equation.
