How many WPM do employers consider good?

I range from 65 WPM with > 95% accuracy to > 70 WPM with my accuracy declining as I get faster.

I have to take a couple tests on Sat and one of the tests is a typing test. I consider myself a fast typer, but not Robin Williams on really good coke typer. Is there a standard?

Are you sure that 65 is fast?

It depends on the job you're looking for. Generally, 45+ is good enough to be considered.

ETA - Just remember, accuracy is more important than speed.

What field are you in that typing speed matters? I've not once met an employer who gave a shit about typing speed. It's hard to find anyone under the age of 30 in this day and age that isn't an extremely fast typist.

Not at all. That's why I'm asking.

Sales. It would be in a call center and that would be new. The lady who did the phone interview asked me how fast I typed and I told her 65 since I can do that consistently and accurately.

I've never seen a WPM requirement on a job description but even so your speed is fine IMO.

Your WPM sounds just fine. Not to mention you'll pick up speed if you're there for any appreciable amount of time.

There is. Search for 10-key typing test.

As was said 45 is the low end baseline. 65 is decent, and 90+ is considered fast.

What is a bad laptop keyboard? If the keys aren't working properly, why even consider taking a typing test on it?

If it's your laptop, I consider you a lazy bum that can't take care of your computer. If it's your company's laptop, you should talk to IT.

65 seems about average.

last time I had to take a type test, I think I was at 80 wpm (though it varies depending on if it's dictation, copying, or typing from your head).

for everyone asking zomg what requires typing speed... I had to take the test (along with a couple others testing general MS office abilities) when registering with a temp agency back in like 1999-2000.

sitting at a desk in an air conditioned office all day doing data entry or secretarial/receptionist work beat working retail or fast food any day of the week.

Source?

My mother. She worked in clerical jobs her whole life, and 90 was what a good typist will do. I got the 45 number from job listings I've seen, and 65 is almost the median :^)

Per Wikipedia it looks like > 90 is fast.

I could type 140+wpm until the keyboard fell apart. I get comments on my typing speed all the time, but almost no one believes me when I tell them.

In my opinion, 80+ would be good. The real key is whether or not you can touch type. If you're a hunt-and-pecker or if you have to keep looking at the keyboard you're missing a lot of the value. You're best when you're not even thinking that you're typing, but that doesn't necessarily translate to WPM.
