Good to hear, I used to have a G5 1.6 with 1.25GB, and I went to this machine for the portability, and the differnce has been huge. Hopefully the extra RAM will make the gap a bit smaller.

Yeah. We could use a mac forum here. I hate going to mac dedicated forums because if you say that something is wrong with *anything* mac related the rabid mac zealots jump you.

i'm interested in getting a powerbook but plunking down a large chunk of change for a 15" powerbook is kinda dicey. I haven't really used OSX all that much, but i figure its just *nix based (okay BSD) with a nice interface.

I like the hardware and apprently the OS is good, but I've never owned a mac since the Macintosh Classic or something like that. So hard to decided, it feels liek its more of a whim

My 15" 1.5Ghz Powerbook came in about a week ago.

Customizations:
128 VRAM
512 Ram - 1 stick
Combo Drive
5400 80GB

I downgraded the SuperDrive. Although tempting, I have yet to use the DVD burner on my eMachines M6807, so I didn't think I would get much use out of it on my Powerbook either.

This is my first Apple machine. I think OS X is what lured me into the purchase. But the sleek aluminum look helped too. I bought it using the Student Developer Program, but I still found it a bit pricey. I've been very pleased so far.

I found the transition from linux/windows to OS X quite easy. Installing application and tweaking settings is extremely easy and straightforward. I particulary like the nix backend. I've installed X11 and fink to run and install some familiar nix utilies as well. I also started playing around with X Code. It looks to be a promising development and personal system.

I was also surprised to see how seamlessly it works with my Windows notebook. Setting up internet connection sharing (adhoc wireless) and file sharing was a breeze.

I would definitely recommend a Powerbook if you can afford it.

PS: I agree with the posts above about ram. You should definetely have at least 512MB. Even with 512, I've come pretty close to using up all the free memory on my system. My next upgrade will probably be another stick of 512MB or 1GB.
