Thinking about building my next box and putting in USB 2 ports along with Firewire. I don't have any firewire peripherals yet, but the speed sure seems sweet.
 
I always am amazed at how people state that 4 USB ports (standard on most mobo's these days) is not enough. But I guessNFS4 just showed me why.

USB Setup:
Asus A7V w/ 4 USB Ports (2 front/2 rear).
MS Natural Pro over USB (2 additional ports)
MS Intellimouse Explorer over USB (plugged into keyboard)
Handspring Hotsync Cradle

Have no need for printer/scanner (thats what work is for). Don't play games that work better with a gamepad or steering wheel.

Oh yeah, all Legacy Ports are turned off in BIOS. Makes boot-up just that much faster.
 
Zero. My HP Laserjet 1200 printer could be used as parallel or USB. Since parallel has more bandwidth, my printer is faster using the parallel connection. Thus I have no USB devices.

??? more I thought the parrallel port was limited to 1.5 Mbps USB is 12.

I made the decision to do away with my legacy ports back when I built my new computer in the spring. Instead, I use a combination of USB and firewire devices:

-Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro
-Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical
-Microsoft Sidewider Precision Pro 2
-Hercules Game Theater XP USB Hub
-Compaq iPAQ Cradle
-Epson Stylus Color 740
-ORiNOCO 802.11b Wireless USB Client

-QPS Que! 12X10X32X Firewire CD-RW
-Maxtor 80 GB Firewire Hard drive (for backups)

All of my legacy ports have been disabled in the BIOS.

Here is more information. If you don't want to read it, I'll make a summary:

ECP parallel port: 3.0
IEEE1394 (Firewire): 50.0
USB 2.0 Hi-Speed: 60.0

My computer is too old for USB 2.0. Thus I can choose USB 1.1 Full speed at 1.5 MB/sec or ECP parallel at 3.0 MB/sec. The parallel is slightly faster for my printer.

LG 915 FT monitor has 4 USB ports,using one
USB Thrustmaster firestorm dual power gamepad.
Epox 8KHA+ 4 USB ports using 2 .
 
I only have one (Intellieye Explorer mouse) but I use it through the PS2 port.

Legacy ports all the way baby! 😉

I have 5 that could be used through the USB ports, one of which is running USB.

2 are identical mice (one on each computer), they're the ambidextrous 5 button microsoft mice
1 is a Logitech Wingman formula or whatever
1 is a Logitech Wingman extreme or something..
the last is a Hewlette Packard 932C.

The Wheel is the device running on USB becuase I don't have 2 game port thingies.. I honestly don't mind USB for gaming devices, as I don't have any old games, but I like to keep CPU usage to a minimum (that means as little USB for me as possible). i guess I'm a purist in that sense (it's also one reason why i really really wish I had SCSI).

I run the rest on so called 'legacy' ports (WTF is that, they don't slow ANYTHING down at all!), becuase they do their job better than USB (due to less CPU utilization, and no worries about Safe mode in windows or the BIOS, so they just work). USB mice have no advantage over PS/2 mice, PS/2 keyboard, Parallel Port Printers, or gameport game controllers, EXCEPT for reducing IRQ usage (disable Parallel, Serial 1 and 2, PS2 1 and 2 if u can (I don't think I can)).

1) My USB printer uses less CPU time than my Parallel Port one
2) Try plugging in more than one joystick with a gameport connection
3) My USB keyboard has BIOS support and hence DOS support
4) I haven't been in Safe Mode since '98 when I was using Windows 98 First Edition.
 
I was just thinking today about USB devices (hey, I was bored 🙂. I realized how when they came out there was a huge price premium for them, and I decided to wait to get stuff cheaper 🙂:

Here's what I have, and how much I paid for it:
1. HP 812C (paid $8 for a cable for USB hookup)
2. HP Scanjet 2100C (got paid $10 to take it)
3. Handspring Visor (paid $30 used from a friend)
4. USB Webcam (free after MIR)

I also have an MS Intellimouse Explorer, but right now I have it hooked up through PS/2. Will change this when I get my 4 port hub that I just bought off FS/FT 🙂

Hopefully going to add a Canon S300 to it soon 🙂
 
I have only one thing connected directly to my PC's usb port:
- Xircom USB Portstation (1 parallel port, 2 serial ports, ethernet 10, 4 USB ports)

The following items are connected to the PC via the Xircom USB Portstation
- Canon scsi film scanner (using an Adeptec scsi to usb conversion cable)
- External serial modem
- Palm Vx serial cradel
- Epson photo 700 (parallel)
- Creative usb webcam
- Broadband connection

I got the Xircom portstation so that I can access all the hardware from both the PC and the laptop that I'll be buying.
