So what is the correct answer? I dont see how there are 36 1-inch squares as the way I see it y ou just ahve one big squre that is .25 sq. ft (3 sq. inches). Maybe its just been a long day for me and I'm slow right now:p

Edit: I just thoroughly read Dr. Pizza's post and I TOTALLY do not see how he came up with one 6-inch square!

Inverse, a square foot is 144 square inches.... 12 inches on each side.
1/4 of a square foot is 6 by 6. Think of 1/4 of a tile on a kitchen floor.

Ohhhh ok, now I got it. I was taking a 1/4 of 12 getting 3...in which case the answer would be 14, correct?

But you took a quarter of 144....which of course would be 6x6 inches...but if I saw a 6 inch square, I would think that its a half a square foot.


Its all fuzzy math.:D

The interesting thing I discovered when I came up with this problem is that you can actually solve it in about 10 seconds in your head. The 6X6 example that is.

The example I decided to post was a 6X6.....but I could have easily made it a 10X10 which would have yielded an answer of 385 squares.

Anyone see the shortcut?
