How many square miles would EQ be if all 400 zones were life size?

Effing hyuge! You could probably come close with a bit of guesstimating. I would wager there isn't a zone out there that is over a square mile. Even the Karanas don't take too long to run across. So I'd estimate between 250 to 300 square miles. But thats just usable land. Don't forget there is a lot of dead space between some zones that you just plain never see.

I'm guessing pretty dang big. I've never played EQ1 myself, but with 14 expansions, it definitely has a lot of zones.

There are 400 zones according to wiki.
I think the Karanas are definately over a mile wide.
I think they seem smaller because characters move so quickly with SOW.
I could be wrong, of course.
It is difficult to judge the size because it is a virtual world.

Indeed. Sometimes SOW didn't do it though, MQ was pretty sweet. :)
It ruined other MMORPG's for me. Yes I admit it I was a very naughty EQ'er.

I guess there's no harm in discussing it due to the game's age. :)

Was MacroQuest anything like ShowEQ?

MQ is a third party app that allowed (or may still allow, I don't play EQ anymore so I don't know if it's still as functional) you to do some pretty neat things in EQ.
MQ wiki
The macroquest forums can give you an idea of what is possible, however they don't openly talk about things that drew alot of attention to mq like warping and other plugins for mq that garnered the attention of SOE.

If I remember right showeq had the ability to read map files and plot your character, pc's and npc's locations in game through a visual display, these were very different programs however showeq in it's own right was amazing. Correct me if I"m wrong about showeq as it's been quite some time.

That being said for me MQ and ShowEQ kept EQ interesting for me.
