I thought it was 640 but that seems small. Anyone know?

uh, 640 sqare feet is a 20'x32' rectangle... about the size of your living room. (Ok, it'd be a pretty big living room, but still...)

By your calculations, your basement is about 29x larger than my house....that's amazing. ;)

I always remember it (for a rough estimate not perfectly correct) as the playable size of an American football field. Since many people know the dimensions of a football field, the size of an acre is easy to picture. Note: don't include the endzones. Thus 300 ft * 160 ft = 48000 ft^2 ~ 1 acre. Of course if you need the exact number you need to look it up or memorize it.

another easy way to remember is that there are 640 acres in one square mile....(probably where you got the number 640 from)

160 every square quarter mile....etc.

the 'back 40 acres' came from 1/4 of a 160 acre plot.

hey, i'm from nebraska, and grew up a farmer, what more do you want?
