got sick, didn't want to take a sick day, so he called in dead
Hmm, that works. bean counter, bean counter, tally the dead, tally the $$ saved....

28 years, 2 days. Granted I probably gave my employees the plague and bitched when they didn't show up because they died. Pussies.

I would think that having 2 pools would encourage people to actually take their sick days when they're sick, instead of showing up to the office to cover every surface with their germs so they can save the days for their big summer vacation.

 Last place I worked was a single pool of days so every sick day I took off was 1 less day of vacation in some place much more awesome than my house. So the result was that I didn't take a single sick day over the 3.5 years I was there even though there were definitely a few days I should have

Now I have a pool of 15 use-it-or-lose-it sick days and they are very flexible about how you use them even up to the *nod nod wink wink* of planning to be sick on a Friday as long there isn't anything important scheduled and you don't do it every Friday for a while. I told my boss last week that "I think I might be coming down with something so I might have to stay home sick Friday October 23rd."
After my boss checked the calendar and nodded: "I hope you feel better the following Monday"

I can't recall taking a full sick day in 18 years. I'd rather have PTO because I do enjoy taking all of my vacation time.

I guess I have been "lucky" enough to have a few major flu's happen on pre-scheduled vacation days and/or the weekend :/

In the past few years, I have worked from home a few days when I thought that was better than potentially infecting the office.

there are absolutely no benefits to having 2 pools that i can think of.

With 2 pools, you are encouraged to properly take care of your health:
  • If you need to go to the doctor: no lost wages and no lost vacation time. This keeps you healthier.
  • If you have a communicable disease: no lost wages and no lost vacation time. This keeps others from getting you sick becuase they stayed home.
  • Plus, if you just want the maximum vacation time, call in with a few mental health days and go on vacation.
With 1 pool:
  • You must always choose if you want to go to work sick or lose money / lose vacation time.
  • You are encouraged not to go to the doctor since that means lost money or lost vacation time.
  • Others who choose to come in sick get you sick.
Ultimately, with 1 pool, you get no real benefit since you could have just used your sick days for vacations. It is called a mental health day where you recover mentally in Tahiti (or similar). Either way, 1 pool or 2, you would get get 27 days of vacation. But at least others are encouraged not to get you sick with 2 pools.

The main drawback of 2 pools come in if you can't accumulate sick days. But that varies from company to company.

and that only happens when you work for a shitty company lol.

5 days of PTO a year? i wouldn't have even done anything more than a phone screen and probably LOL'ed at them as soon as they told me that on the phone then hang up.
When I got hired, I negotiated it up to 17.5 as part of the hiring process. It is my poor coworkers who didn't think to do the same that really suffer. Especially those with kids. It means no vacation at all for years since kids always require a few sick days for working parents.

newsflash, not every career is software development

and not every industry offers a lot of time off

if you work in such an industry then you don't have the same level of flexibility, unless you want to be unemployed

Sick time is never much of a problem, where I work. We can bank it, for later use, which is an incredible benefit. I probably use more just for doctor and dentist appointments, than I do for actual FLS (feel like sh*t) days.

What is a sick day? If I feel like crap I just don't go to work. No sick days, no vacation used, still get paid.

I don't get sick often but when I do I'm out for a while. So I voted 5, but that's more of an average. I'd say I probably take like 10 every 2 years all in one shot.
