my dad has taken 1 sick day total in 25 years, because he has never worked at a place that gives sick days. you just don't get paid.

I have days where I don't feel great, but no, I don't really get sick. The reason I scheduled the neck surgery, was that I only get 4 personal days, and I needed 5 weeks off.
 
For me PTO & Vac are separate. I get 4 days of PTO a year. While I can't bank any PTO from year to year I get paid for the unused time in the middle of Dec. Haven't missed a day in years for being sick though, just haven't got that sick luckily.

and yes, i know most people don't use them, which is why i'm trying to understand why someone would say having 2 pools is better. i've worked in both where i had 2 pools and 1 pool, and there are absolutely no benefits to having 2 pools that i can think of.

Not to mention that, in most states, with PTO upon termination you would be paid out those 105 days versus two separate pools where the company would only pay out your accrued vacation and you would lose your accrued sick.
 
My company is separate pools. 4 sick, 15 pto.

I don't think my manager allows me to use sick outside of sick.

Well, at least I get 11 holidays + 4 half days prior to some holidays.

i use however many "sick days" i need to based on how sick i get that year. last year i got a stomach bug and took off 2 days.

i get 27 days of PTO though.

that's unfair though, what if you get mononucleosis, no holidays for you!
Also most people don't have 27 days of PTO so it's even worse.

I don't think that if a company has X PTO days and Y sick days and then changes policy you're really going to get X + Y single pool PTO days. So it's a false comparison. I understand that people who don't fall ill have advantage from this.

Get 13 use 4-7. Usually use a couple in spring and fall when sinus issues hit hard. Our bank is unlimited, I have about 75 days saved up. Will come in useful if I ever have to take a few weeks off for surgery, paternity leave, etc.
 
Vacation and sick are seperate for me. I get like 12 days a year of sick. Of which I probably use 5 or 6 days worth a year. We can use our sick leave for doctors appointments and the such so it's nice using that pool instead of vacation. I have like 60 some days banked with no cap. Its nice knowing if I break my leg or have a kid I can take a month off and get paid.

A guy I worked with never took a sick day. Had a year till retirement with around 375 days of sick. For the last year he worked two days a week (we can be sick for three days without a doctor's note) and was "sick" the other three. Still had a nice cash out when he did retire
 
I get PTO only, no sick time. Accrue 10 days by the end of this year, 12 the next. Max carryover of 200 hours in a couple years. Last time I called off sick was almost three years ago, and there have been plenty of plague waves since then.

I can see sick time being great for a family care policy or major surgery...but most times I see people using it so often for themselves for the flu I think they belong in a bubble.
 
I have vacation time and sick time which are the same thing for all intents and purposes except you cant 'schedule' sick time. You basically have to call out to use it.

So the # of times I call out each year is pretty much = to the number of sick days I get each year.
 
I get 60 hours a year of sick time. Normally use 2-3 days worth a year.. but that includes doctors appointments, taking care of a sick child if I had one (I should find out if I can use it to take care of a sick dog), etc. Half of whatever I don't use I get paid out at the end of the year and the other half goes to a sick time bank. Think once the bank hits a certain number it then pays out anything over that.
 
Averaged maybe 1 day a year at my last job. I don't get majorly sick that often and I feel bad about abusing sick days -- I shouldn't considering that everyone else used them as hangover recovery days.
 
That's one of the nice things about being retired...I can take as many "sick days" as I want...including "mental health days," and no one cares...😛 (and my income doesn't change)
 
Since doctor's offices aren't open on the weekend, I use my hours for those visits throughout the year. I'm rarely horribly sick (knock on wood) to take full days off.
