When I was born I had 4 older brothers. A couple years later I acquired a baby sister.
Obvious answer - I have 5 siblings.
However, 6 months before I was born another of my brothers was killed by a car. There had once been 5 boys, but when i was born, there were only 4.
All the time when I was young, the usual answer to that question was that I had 5 siblings. This being small town Ohio, everybody knew the whole story, and I accepted that 5 was the right answer.
A million years have passed, I'm old, divorced and dating. This is one of the common questions that often comes up in the get-to-know-you part. It's not something I care to discuss at length, just want a quick answer, but I want to be accurate.
Oh, and one other thing: another of my brothers died about 10 years ago, cancer. So in that sense, I have 3 brothers and one sister still living.
If, heaven forbid, you are in a similar situation, how do you respond to this kind of thing? If you outlive all your siblings, do you then become an only child?
