I am trying to get into working out and want to do some exercises at home? I am about 5'11" 155 lbs so want to put on muscle and get toner in the abs and pecs. What's a good # of pushups crunches and situps to aim to do per day?

I don't know, but I used to do a minimum of 50 situps before bed every night for a few months back in HS.

well i've been doing that for about a year, coupled with regular visits to the gym and rowing, so overall, yeah i've noticed a difference. a year ago, that little routine would make be burn/sore...now it doesn't do much...

Typically doing pushups will not give you any size increase or bulk that you want, however they will (obviously) increase your muscular stamina of your pecs. It is almost like running; doing a lot of running doesn't add bulk to your legs but obviously it increases your endurance.

I am not saying do not do pushups, but they will not give you the bulk that you would see from doing the typical benchpress, dumbell press, inclined press, etcetera.

Anyhow my advice would be to do as many pushups as you can until failure then go to your knees and keep doing them until failure. Do a couple of sets like that everyday and I think you will see some improvement over time.

I do 45 (15x3) crunches with 2 second holds at the up position before coming back down.

There's all kinds of variations that you can do, but one of the main things to do is to do them until you hit the point of muscle failure. And try to do a few more each time. Don't forget to alternate muscle groups, as well.

I do diamond pushups. Sets of 10-15, try to get in 200 on my non-lifting days. Not much of a difference in my pecs but a huge improvement in my triceps.

For tone, do cardio and squats. Tone means losing fat.

all the stars with the washboard stomachs can probably do a ton of them easily. They are criticized and laughed at by geeks everywhere if not.

Abdominal muscles are composed entirely of fast twitch muscle fiber, indicating that it's generally ok to train them regularly...there is no reason to 'take time off.'

The opposite is true, say, of your pecs.

Abs just do whatever. It hardly matters, because 90% of one's midsection is based upon fat levels. You can train all day but if your bodyfat is 12% or something, you just won't be seeing them.

Pushups I'd do a few failure sets every couple of days. The reps would be high so this would probably be ok. If you want extra weight put on a heavy backpack.

Of course it goes without saying that if you're serious about this you'll find access to weights.

400 crunches twice a day...that's what I usually do...it doesn't take long so it's no big deal...

p.s. Gym memberships are for suckers...

If you're doing workouts at home and don't plan to do pull-ups then you're doing yourself a great disservice.

BTW, buy a dumbbell so you can do weighted crunches. Non-weighted crunches are for sissies. ;)

That's a lame thing to say.

I've hardly ever seen anybody who looks good with their shirt off unless they workout at a gym or at least have a solid workout setup at home. The one exception is a guy I know who's got an incredibly low bodyfat from running a lot and actually somehow built up some amount of muscle using those stretchy bands. For most people a low bodyfat isn't going to get you anywhere unless you have some muscle to show as well, and for that you need a gym.

That's because Gym's in West Virginy consist of Hay Bails and a few Milk Crates Copme to the civilized world and you will notice that Gym's are actually better exercise than chasing around your sister when you are feeling randy!

Learn proper grammar before you attempt poor insults. It was a valiant effort though...
